I'd like to make just a few corrections to Tom Blattler's excellent story on the Final Round Speedway Qualifier at Cal Expo. Announcer Larry Huffman kept making the same mistake and I'm sure that is where Tom picked it up. This was not the " fi rst- e ve r " qualifier. How did they ' think we qualified SCOtt Autrey for the finals last year? We had a qualifying round at San Jose and a final round the next night at Cal Expo last year. It was as exciting as the one at Costa Mesa as we had three riders tied for first: SCOtt, Dennis Robinson and Paul Orlandi. SCOtt won the ,.unoff with Dennis second and Paul third. . . The other item concerned Northern Champions. John Cunningham was a high point rider. but he never took the championship. Champions were John Fishburn in 1971. Pat Rooney in 1972. Mike Rooney in 197:'1, Paul Orlandi in 0 1974 ,' and Rich MacMurray in 1975 and 1976 . STEPHENj. ROONEY ,JR. Sacramento, CA Sentee'ORV park The draft of the environmental impact report (EIR) on the proposed Santee ORV park in San Diego Country, Calif. is now available for review at the Integrated Planning Office . En vironmental analysis Division. 9150 Chesapeake Drive, San Diego; "The Ecology Center, 340 Kalmia, San Diego; and at the EI Cajon, Lakeside; and Santee branches of the County Library. Along with increasing opposition in the Santee area . this report could kill any chances of a park in the County. This EIR will undoubtedly serve as a model for future ORV park proposals. What is now needed, badly, is public complaints as to the inaccuracy of .Jh is drafLWrite your county supervisor. Remember, all segments of the public can benefit from this park. PAUL HEFFERLIN San Diego County Off- Road Vehicle Committee San Diego, CA Yamaha blocking , If you missed the movie "Roller Ball" don't fret. The plot was to win at all costs, and that's what Yamaha planned for San Antonio, August 14. the last 1977 125 National and maybe the last 125 National ever. Pack your bags and see ~ike Bell, Burgett and Karsmakers, lay back and make sure that Glover scores 40 to 50 points and LaPorte does not score over 29. That meansa sixth and seventh place in two motos for Danny. You notice I left out Hannah's name in the list of the Storm Troops - he's not buying Yamaha's plan, and he's in such great demand he could care less - in fact he will try to blow teammate Glover's door off. Not so, you say? Well, we are talking about dollars, folks . Win and win big and you sell, sell, J!ell. Marty Smith is still selling the few CR125s being sold and he has not been near one in over a year. I am not implying that Marty won his championship with Storm "Troops. I personally hope Broc wins , but Broc, I think should win it fair and.square. Danny's OK too, and the reason he's ahead today is because the Yamahas DNFed at Hangtown and LaPorte has ridden consistently. So, Warren, Steve Wise , Chuck Sun, Ogden, Richter and Mark Barnett, go Jar it and Yamaha if you really do plan on taking Danny out and winning "Roller Ball" style, may your reed valves play sour music on BRUCE PAPES,JR., President Springs Fan Club 614 No. Broadway St . Joliet, IL 60435 Helmets Papa Wealey asked for some arguments as to why Tim Barela , '(or any other bike rider), should wear a protective helmet. Telling someone it will spare their loved ones agony or just save some money in hospital bills won 't do any good if they don't feel the few minutes it takes to put on a helmet is worth saving their life . . . and who should know better than they what their life is worth. ROXANNE WILLIAMS La Puente , CA Robe('ts and Baker Think about it! Wouldn't it be bitch in to see Ken Roberts and Steve Baker rid ing the European 24-Hour Endurance Races ' for Yamaha next year? DA VE KISELESKI San Mateo, CA Yes. Especially since the new Yamaha four. cylinder makes horsepower everywhere and still runs 136 miles per hour stock . . . Ed . CheCkpoint European Scrambles In Gary Laudig's report on the July 31st Checkpoint European Scrambles, he reported Tom Brooks as winning the Open Expert class . This was incorrect, Tom somehow forgot to officially enter the race. When I found out, it was too late to let Gary know in time for his Cycle News deadline for that week. But when Cycle News came out that week, there was no article on our race. So I called Gary, assuming he would want the story correct when it came out the following week. When I told him what · had happened, I was very surprised with his "so what" attitude. I feel that if Gary truly wanted to be a good journalist, he would have made an effort to correct-the story. It wasn't tdo late, as he had indicated to me. This also was a disserviceto the real winner, Brent Wallingsford. as RON ALVES, President Checkpoint M.C . Burbank, CA
