Green, £II;s smoke at AM£ Youth MX By Judy Greenberg VALENCIA. CA . AUG . 5 The 83cc Modified, 12 and Over Juniors went to Eddie Green, who turned in a 1-3 ride during A .M.E. Youth Division's night 20 motocross at Indian Dunes. Jon Turner was first to leave the line. with Duane Headworth, josh Devane , Green. and Mike Bess running close behind. By the second lap Headworth got by Turner, as Bess came charging through the pack, moving into second behind Headworth. The two riders were side by side at times. taking th e. turns just right . but try as he might , Bess couldn't get around Headworth. The pressure was a little too much for both riders , a s they went down together in the same tum . Green took over to win th e moto , followed by Devane . The second tim e , Bess was the fro nt runner until th e very las t lap wh en Headworth took it , awa y as th ey came out of th e esses. Headworth won th e moto, much to h is cred it. .as he had just finished back-eo-back rnot os in th e Open class . Green fought with Devane and Turner throughout the moto , ta~i_Rg th ird . ., ...,, '" "', -. "'• • , , Andy Ellis pulled terrific leads to win both rnotos of the SlIcc Stock Junior, 9·11 year aids. Tony Nagy and Louis Nagy kept Ellis on the move in the first moto.rThe riders left the gate in moto two with Ellis again in the lead. Louis Nagy went down in the hairpin . leaving Tony to put the pressure on Ellis . Ellis worked up a healthy lead, while Tony Nagy was busy fighting off Frank Darr. Charlie Morris moved up to Darr to make it a 'threesom e . Mario Barbaric had his work cut out keeping Jake Devane behind him through the mota. When it was all over, Tony Nagy finished second overall behind Ellis . Jim Ford took the win for the 9·11 SlIcc Modified Juniors . Gary Szilagyi (Pasadena Suz.) fought Ford all the way in the first mota , until he had the • lead and the win . In the second mota. Ford again grabbed the front pos ition . Frank Darr, who didn't run the first moto, kept right ill Ford's back wheel . •as Szilagyi moved in o n Darr. Trackmaster rider Charlie Morris was on the move. and soon got by Szilagyi to fight Darr for the second spot right through to the flag . John O 'Mara (Suz·AI Baker ) took off in th e lead with J eff Stubblefield running seco nd. Some heav y dicing was taking pla ce between Paul Lane and Shore for third. Shore was really fightin g to hold on to fou rt h with Danny Thompson breathing dow n his jersey. Stubblefield was closing fast on O'Mara, right alon gside him . Sh ore took over th ird and fough t to ho ld it down to th e wire. At the Tast minute. Stubblefield made his m ove a nd took over the lead. . Sturgeon was closin g fast on Lane until. he went down and damaged h is shifte r. Shore was still leading Lane a nd it was a battle righ t down to the wire between O'Mara and Danny Thompson for fourth . At 't he finish line Shore crossed over to first overall . seco nd went to Stubblefield and th ird to Lane . Out to mak e T V stars of themselves, the 125 Intermediates ch arged off th e line, sp rayi ng rooster ta ils clear across th e track . Jimmy Crowder (Suz -Suz . Sports Center) led t he pack off CanAm Hill with Greg Taylo r. ( Ho n Air cone) hot on his ta il in second. With his pipe falling off, Taylor was forc ed back and Da vid Strong mo ved on into sec ond. Loren White was running a strong third and continued down to the end of the mota. T lie second time off the lin e. Duffy Phelps took over with Strong right on him and a huge pa ck all piled up behind them . Gary Jones and Roger Gu zman had a duel for th ird that continued throughout the moto . All four of the top riders wer e holding a tight formation throughout the moto . When the winning checkered fla g . went out. David Strong emerged the victor. second overall went to Phelps and J ones took down third . Monte McCoy proceeded to control both the 250 and 500 Pro ra ces with back-to- back double wins, p icking up 600 points for the evening as well as two of the winners purses. In the 500 Pros , the duel was between Rusty Hunt and McCoy. with Andy Jannings (Yam-Bill Krause) pu shing both of them to the lim it . In th e first rnoto , Hunt was leading with McCoy running second ' until the back stretch when Monte passed for the lead. Jannirigs was in third and keeping the heat on . In the second moto, Hunt again grabbed the hol eshot and led th e pack until McCoy took over. Hunt wa s sta ying in close and trying everything he could to get by McCoy. Then he started to fall back with bike problems . and wa ved Jannings on by. That was th e break Jannings was looking ~or and he went to work on McCoy. McCoy would pull away on th e straights and was appareritly concerned about his rear wheel . as he kept glancing down . He appeared to be ra cing on a flat t ire . but still managed to hold his position . Dean Taylor had moved into thi rd and was challenging .Jannin~ but was forced to hold his position. By th e end of the race McCoy-came home to first ov erall . Jannings took d own second and third went to Taylor. . For th e 250 Pro race. McCoy's main competition came from Greg Youngblood and Da ve Haugh . Youngblood went down in a crash and a red flag was out on th e ra ce . By that tim e McCoy had the lead with Haugh pushing hard in second and McCoy's Mid -Vall ey t eammat e, T o ny DeLaTorre. keeping t he he at on Haugh . T he second moto belonged to M cCoy and Haugh . Haugh wa s lead ing a nd held off McCoy for some time . until he was passed on th e b ack o f th e tra ck . When th e winning chec kered flag waved th em in , McCoy took down top mon ey, seco nd went to Haugh a nd th ird to DeL aTorre . H augh ca me ba ck from second in th e 250 Pro race to tak e th e Ra ce of Cha m pions , which was ru n backwards on the track for a prize of $25 a nd th e m a dness of d oing it. . Springman, Lawson split dough at Corona HM/ST By Elaine Jones CO RO NA , CA . AUG . s Eddie Lawson gOt off to an early start in the Corona Raceway half mile /short track by jumping into the lead in the Open Expert half mile. .H ot on his heels was a muchim proved Terry Statum with Tom Heard . coming out of retirement , in th ird . It became a battle of Statum challenging and ' Lawson not ha ving any of it, while Heard, definitel y out of shape , just hung in there look ing for the mistakes that never came. The Money half mile again brought Statum and Lawson together and this time Statum made a race out of it. Lawson was off on top with Statum again in the second slot and Dylan Neihart-in third . Laws on went for the run-a -way but found out that : Statum was running right behind him while Neihart 'wa s battling with Craig Armstrong for the sh ow money. Lawson is pretty hard to be at playing on h is own turf and W ednesday was no exception, Statum was second a nd Neihart held o ff a fast closing ' Armstrong for th e third. . The race for the short track dough bel onged to Jeff Springman from th e drop of th e flag. The battle for second was another story. T erry Singleton ca me off in second with Jay Lewis third. On the fifth lap , Singleton went wid e and that was all Lewis needed to tuck a wheel underneath and slip into seco nd . Singleton was never able to recou p his losses and had to settle for third . Statum d idn't go home with out a victory as he cl a imed the Open Amateur/Expert short track . Statum hadhis name on the numero uno spot and th at's where he.went when the flag dropped . Shawn Le ip old . who j o u rneye d down fr om N orth ern California , tu cked into th e second posit ion with Springman in thi rd. On th e th ird lap , Springman got Leipold and went looking for Statum . Statum , not a bo u t to play the bridesmaid role. held him off to th e checkered. Leipold succumbed to bike problems at th e halfw ay point and Greg Wood mov ed up to take over third . Dylan Neihart is really sta rti ng to turn on, collecting wins on both th e sho rt track and half mile 250 Exp ert even ts.
