Bill Joyce comes north to Suntargets MX By Susan Wiley YAKIMA . WA .jULY 17 Bill J oyce (Suz) m ade an appea rance at Suntargest m o to cross track a nd proceed ed to cleanup in the 125 Pro races with hol eshots in both m otos and held it to t he fin ish easily. It was a cha nge from t he regular co m pet it io n b etween t he Northwest riders; Gary Racca ( I w) , Pa t Ja cobson (5w). and Lee Voss (2w). who usually ba ttle it ou t for the first position. How ever. it was th e fier ce competit ion following Joyce that held the spectators' attention. Voss (Suz) wa s holding second position with Jacobson (Suz) in third and Ma rk Gregson . Oregon's Number One rider pushing hard from behind. jacobson . and Gregson ca me together and in th e battle of handlebars Gregson lost it and had to take a minute ou t to straight en the bends. As for Washington's top rid er. Gary Racca . he had a long day as m echanical problems led to DNFs both motos. Gr egson ca me ba ck to lead the first 250 Pr o moto fro m sta rt to finish. jacobson held second with Kev in jansen finishing third . The second 250 Pr o moto was a matter of endurance as jacobson leading fough t hard to hold off the ch arg e of Gregson . Nevertheless. Gregson m ade th e pass on th e fifth lap and proceeded to extend h is lea d and execute some sty lis h c ross ups over the double jumps. Tim Aston won the 80cc Mini event after a fine ride. Competing under a 15 yard handicap . Aston was in third going into the first turn behind Rusty Elam and Clint Ballinger. Ballinger and then Elam succumbed to the pressure applied by Aston who took over the lead on the third lap. Elam finished second and Ballinger third . In a three way battle for first in the 100cc Mini competition . top honors went to Bobby Thomas. Al Ramirez got the hole shot followed by Thomas and Mike Cagle in third . Thomas did not get by Ramirez until the white flag lap but get by he did and came away No. I . Cagle finished half a wheel behind Ra mirez. The battle for money points continues in the Exper t Semi -Pro race . Saturday night was no exc eption in what turned out to be a four way battle for first . Putting a y." of a lap between them a nd the res t of the pack a nd engaging in their own private battle was j eff Fowler. Cliff Hylton . john Sudberry and Dennis Frisbie who finished in that order. The closest cont ender still keeping sight of Ar ch ibald was Danny Wood riding to a very consistent sec on d overall , lea ving th ird to Maico-mounted Dale Bohm . While the battle for first wasn't rea lly a battle. th e action back in th e pack proved interesting as so me fa mi lia r d esert riders turned out to try the night MX scene for th e first time. One suc h rider mixing things up was Prest on Gerber , re cent 250 class winner of the " L as Vegas 400 ." Another was Dave Bla ylock , wh o seemed to have made friends in the night business but not fam e. yet. Highlighting the Open cla ss was th e weekly wheel crushing Pete Watson on his red -fra med Maico. Dialed out in fifth gear over Plaza Peak. Watson had to attem pt a ch a nge of direct ion in mid -air in order to avoid a dodging flagger directl y in front of him. Cursing. he fin all y came to a stop a fter taking ou t 60 fee t of sideline flags a nd for gin g a deep. rutted irrigat ion d itch . Second was left to you ng Bulra co rider jerry Sorens en , foll owed by a smooth Rand y Evans who encountered some minor crash-and burns. which took him out of t he content ion for th e top spot. Once again it was Dan Letchinberg who wound up top 125 Pro of the evening after staying well in front of a p ersist ent G reg Madsen.
