250 Experts Ron ArIt 1591 and Tom Cantrell do a tag·team duet into the wall at Cycleland Speedway. Weber first at Cycleland By Pat Upton CHICO, CA,jULY 16 Cycleland's y& mile oval was the scene of some exciting short track competition which began early in ·the program with the 125 Novice competition. Mark Gilbert got the holeshot and went all the way but not without a fight . Mike Egbert gave chase , tried to find an opening on the inside , couldn't and · tried to take Gilbert on the outside and still didn't make it. Finally he crossed the finish line inches behind Gilbert. All the while another battle was going for third between Tony Cunha and Pat Siegle with Cunha coming out on top . Riders from Biggs on Yamahas cleaned up in the 200 junior Scratch event, placing first , second and third . Troy Cummings got the holeshot with Tom Green in hot pursuit. Green challenged again and again but could not shake Cummings loose from the number one spot. Third place went to Pete Upton who got off the line in fourth behind Alvin jenkins. Upton made his move in lap four getting under jenkins in the first turn . It took two restarts before the 250 Junior Scratch race got underway . Mark Weber, Doug Reiswig and jerry Douglas really put on a show in a three way battle for .first . Weber took over first in the second lap and was able to hold off advances from Reiswig and Douglas who finished second and third respectively. • Results in Results Section . current White Plate point leader Rusty Davis. With over 100 riders and the best crowd in the recorded history of this Tuesday night affair, the racing was optimum and ran smoothly. Mini kids Chris Baker and jeff Nichols shared the spotlight in the combined 80/100 Expert round after a blood curtling crash by Chris Carr. Frank Sanchez rode his Sonny Kenyon Bultaco to the 125 Novice win ove r Adam Maggetti while Dale Hanen put the hat on Bob "Boo-Boo" Trono and Brian Pecore turned disadvantage into luck in a tough fight with Bob Cunnington for the Expert class win . . Recently turned 14 is Tony Deatherage, his years of minibiking as an expert proved fruitful, with a come from behind win over motocrosser Teddy Cabral on a trick Ossa that busts berms but doesn 't handle very well. Paul Iwanaga keeps putting down all comers in the 250 Junior class this time defeating John Carter and Dale Hansen in good order. Fenn Pervier continues to dominate the local scene in the 360 Expert class winning easily on his Quality Cycle Bulraco over Charlie Gondala and returning john Guglielmetti who looks , for all purposes , like he hadn't quit racing over two years ago . • Results in Results Section . Second Mini Expert M ark Gren leads anot her ri der at CMC's Bonneville Raceway.mot ocross. half a dozen bikes after executing some beautiful 360· turns into oncoming fellow riders . Dan Letchinberg and Steve Holdberg slipped through easily, followed by Gary Randall, a newcomer and stranger to Bonneville regulars, In two laps Randall was leading handily and you could hear the fans' reaction of "who is that guy?" It wasn't easy for the locals at all as Randall put together three good motos for the overall and a second time rookie, . Bryan Haslern, came home with second. Steve Holdberg managed to pass his way to third comfortably. The surprise of the night came when both 250 and Open Pro classes were combined because of only three original Open class riders, much to the disa ppointment of those doubling up . Kenny Archiba ld showed why he is one of the 250 class favorites . With good speed and consistency , he had little trouble clinching top honors with the exception of Eldon Copier threatening to pass in th e corners but failing to do so. T hird money went to Pete Watson who usually rides both classes while demolishing the spokes in his front wheel in th e process for the third time in a row . In In his first race on Startup's MX course since moving to the pro ranks, Rod Casper (Suz) made up lots of ground after crashing By W. H. Spencer its 12th week of action , some of the top pros still bidding for number one slots are Dan Letchinberg, Kenny Archibald, Eldon Copier and Mike O'Driscol, They are also a few of many responsible for turning Friday night motocross int o a "spectator special. " Once again the lineu p of the 125 Pros started the crowd off to another unforgettable evening as 15 riders shot into the first corner to find it had been freshly watered after practice, spilling in th e first lap to take the win in rnoto one. Troy Werner, who also recently advanced to expert status , brought along his bike when he ca me from Monte Vista , California to visit his Washington relatives. Evidently he and his Suzuki felt right at home on the new ground , although he .finished behind Casper in the first go-around , Werner took the 125 Expert overall win after a third p lace finish in rnoto two . Casper experienced ' some SANTA ROSA, CA,JULY 19 AI Kenyon made a return to the spotlight with an excellent 250cc Expert win at the annual Sonoma County fair at the Chris Beck 28 Arena . He hadn't raced this track since becoming an expert some four years ago but the return was one with a wire to wire win over Rick Delacy and problems and had to settle for fourth, but his combined scores gave him second overall. Tom Bevaart (Suz) with a 4-2 score finished third overall. Rich Binckley (Yam) rode to first overall in the 250 Expert class scoring' a third and a second. Dan Brown (Bul) finished second after winning the first moto and scored a fourth later, and Pat jacobson (Suz) was third after a 51 score. This had to be the premier race of the day, with 18 fast riders dicing and throwning di!!, it was the race to watch. jacobson was the leader from the start of moto one until a series of problems, including crashing twice and throwing a chain finally cost him . The race then was between Brown, Binckley, Dave Therriault (Yam) and Brian Morgan (Mai), with Brown getting the win . In moto two jacobson led from wire-to-wire on his Bellevue Suzuki -sponsored RM, Binckley was second , 'Morg an third and Brown fourth. . The Open Expert overall winner was Aurora Cycle-sponsored Randy McAllister (Ma i) with Scott Morton (Yam) second , and Mark Hopkins (Yam) third . Ed Therriau lt (Yam) was running first in the first moto, but later DNF'd after crashing. In moto two Therriault cam e back and won the moto , earning some cash but missed out on the overall. Racking up another win in the 125 " B" class, Doug Smith (Suz ) will be riding Expert class his next time out. Bob Dawson (Suz) was second and James Bowman (Yam) third . The "m ost spectacular get-off of the day" honors hav e to go to 125 " B" rider Paul Gross . After getting th~ holeshot and holding the lead for a half-lap in moto one , Gross high-sided and his RM began doing flip ·flops with Paul, arms and legs firmly attached . Seems he had one boot firml y caught. Lucikly the pack managed to avoid him , so when Paul and his bike stopped spinning he jumped back on and got back in th e race . ' Tim Birk (Suz) had the hard-luck story of th e day ... he led every lap of the 250 "B " first rnoto but had to settle for third when he threw his chain just a few feet short of the checkered. He managed to redeem hims elf by winning rnoro two for first overall .
