In 125 Pro action at Ascot. Tim Lunde leads Ray Lopez. took control, keeping Payne in second and Brad Nevins running third. These three had a super tight race all moto long and down to the wire, where Payne crossed over to a first overall, Hackman .scooped up second and third went to C.J. Stanley with a 5·4 ride for Suzuki City. . Evan Marcus started off the night of racing in fine form by winning the 125 Pro race. He had an absolutely beautiful lead with Bob Kline running second and Kirk Sturgeon in third . Mike Brown: graduated from Minis to big bikes was running a strong fourth and Bobby Jones was challenging him in fifth . The second time around Jones was leading with a battle on his hands keeping Mike Pillar behind him in second. Evan Marcus was holding down the third place slot with Kline in fourth . By the end of the race Marcus (Yam-Granada Yam) came on home 10 first overall, Jones took Second and third went to Kline. • Results in Results Section. Toyama and Lunde sparkle at Ascot MX By Rico Hawkes GARDENA, CA ,JULY 21 Gregg Toyama rode his FMF sponsored Honda and flew to victory in both motos of the 125 Pro race at .Asco t night MX . The action was fast as the crowd watched Toyama battle local favorite Tim Lunde (Yam ), from Redondo Beach. The start of the first moto saw three FMF riders, Toyama, Doug Nicol , and Cliff Lett digging for the first tum advantage. Toyama ,pulled it out of the crowd and he wasn't to be caught. Nicol bounced high in the air in a back-stretch get-off. letting Lunde slip by for second place, The second moto was all Toyama as he threw his Honda high into the air off the jumps and laid it down in the comers which brought the crowd to their feet. Lunde followed close behind to finish second overall. Yamaha-mounted Lunde bounced back to take top money in the 250 Pro class. He rode, comfortably to a first place finish in both motos. Joe Plantz, on a Maico, was Lunde's closest competition, riding to second , place honors. Mark Toyama was the man .to beat in the mini-class as, well. He followed " t . i I Monte McCoy 183HIis about to pass Bill Cook in AME 250 Pro action. McCoy finished second in the 250 class and won the 5OOs. family tradition by grabbing first·turn holeshots in both motos of the crowded mini event. Little Scott Graham suffered through spills in both motos but was still able to get back on the track and ride to a second overall. Dual moto victories were also posted by Rick Savers in the 100 Intermediate class, Ron Mabry in the 125 Junior race, Ron Stablem in the 250 Intermediate, and a very consistent Steve Woerner in the 500 Junior class . the way. Bobby Headworth was in second being pursued by Tichenor. When Tichenor got by, Headworth found Todd Bess at his back wheel. The battle continued right down to the wire , with Tim Thomason joining in behind Bess. The three riders were . so close , it was anyone's race for third, but Headworth hung on to finish in front of Bess and Thomason. Held received the overall win. • Results in Results Section. Headworth tops B3cc Modified at AMEYouthMX .Fast recovery By Judy Greenberg nets McCoy AME 500 Pro win By Lee Taylor VALENCIA, CA , JULY 22 VALENCIA , CA,JULY 24 Duane Headworth (Cycle Stop) took a pair of wins for the overall in the 83cc Modified 12 and over Juniors at A.M.E. 's, Youth The 500 Pro race had to be one of the most exciting and challenging races seen at the Dunes and Monte McCoy emerged the Division night MX held ' at Indian Dunes. ' Jon Turner grabbed the holeshot as the first moto took off the line . Headworth was in · the second spot followed by Eddie Green and Josh Devane. ' Turner was on his way, building a healthy lead as he rocketed around the course, until he spun out at the tower turn long enough for Headworth to take over. Turner quickly slipped into second to go after Headworth , but Headworth held on for the finish . Brent Powell didn't get the best position off the line , but worked through the pack to take fourth from Devane before the flag came out. It was Headworth with the early lead in the second moto, followed by Turner and Powell . Cindy Dumo came charging until she reached second, then put the heat on Headworth. She tried every angle to get by, but Headworth held his lead. Turner lost third to Powell when he went down coming out of the ess turn . Dumo tried taking the inside of _the hairpin and went down, leaving Headworth plenty of room to build his lead. Powell moved into second, finishing behind Headworth and taking second overall. Walter Armendariz (Smittys Cycles) built a super lead to win the first moto of the Modified Junior Cyde Juniors. Ronnie Tichenor (Cycle Sports Yam) and Brian Held (Peskys) had a fight for second through the entire moto, with Tichenor giving it up to Held at the finish . " ,. I,n. the ~cl;ln.d ~oto,. it ,was H~ld. all victor, riding one of the finest races ever on a Mid -Valley KTM . In the fi rst moto , Kurt Bledsoe grabbed the holeshot with Mark White (Hus -Simi Yam) close behind in second. McCoy was running third with Tom Webb coming up alongside and challenging him hard . McCoy started closing on White and fast ! Going over the rabbit jumps, McCoy and White were wheel to wheel , with White gassing it for dear life. In the tum in the sand ' wash , McCoy got by both White and Bledsoe and held his lead down to the wire . Bledsoe, in trouble , had to DNF as White took over the number two position and Webb held third. The second time out, White was ready and charged off the line with Steve Rawson behind him, Webb in third and Bill Wall running fourth . White and Rawson battled for several of the 15-lap race and Rawson got by. McCoy meanwhile, had been moving up through the pack and settled in third with a secure lead over Bill Wall and Bill Hagen, who were dueling for fourth. White started to close on Rawson coming along the outside out of the gully. As McCoy started to narrow Rawson's lead, Rawson moved over and waved him by, not wanting to hold up a faster rider. McCoy was closing fast on White, soon there was less than one-half-bike's length between them. Then McCoy went down in the approach turn to the drop-off. McCoy musr've set a new record for recovery - as he went down he kept his clutch in. throttle on, barely touched the ground, ) 'I I J; ..' I : ~ j J .:. . , I ' ~ , ~ • .J J ... 'J remounted and started to close up the gap between himself and White, not more than four or five bike lengths. McCoy caught up and took over the lead from White going through the sand wash loop. When the -checkered flag finally went out after 15 long, hot laps , McCoy crossed over to first overall, White held his own for second and Rawson took home third. Edwin Arnet (Sua-Cole Bros.) took the overall win in the 125 Intermediates with back to back wins . In the first moto, Duffy Phelps took the holeshot with Arnet in hot pursuit. Chris Voelker (Yam -Granada Yam) was holding down third with Robbie Healy coming up from behind and passing for fourth. The second time around , Arnet , grabbed the holeshot with Healy in second, Wickland running third and Greg Taylor (Hon -Aircone) in fourth. Kurt Headlund (Hon -Aircone), in his last intermediate ride, was moving and [ast, Starting out dead last , he moved into fourth and was pushing Wickland hard for third . By the end of the eight· lap race, Arnet rode on home with top honors, Healy took second and third went to Voelker. In the 125 Pros , Tim Locey (Yarn Simi Yam) came home the victor. In the first rnoto, John O'Mara pulled the lead off the line with Locey right behind him . Chip Johnson was runn ing third with Bob Kline breathing down his jersey in fourth. Coming along the back sand wash, Locey got by and moved on into the lead. Jim Holley, in his second 125 Pro race fresh from the 100s and minis , was dueling for sixth with Jeff Harriott and Andy Jannings . Jannings was moving up fast , passing two riders in the hairpin tum in front of the tower. Holley had been staying up with Jannings ; taking the down hill side by side. The second time around, O'Mara again took the lead. This kid gets the most fantastic starts of any pro around! Johnson was running second, hot on O'Mara's tail and Kline was wheelieing down the sand wash in third, coming up fast . O'Mara and Johnson were barely hanging onto their positions. Kline moved on by both O'Mara and Johnson before he went down in the sand wash with a busted gear box . There were a lot of lead changes taking place with Jerry Shore, who had been running fourth, moving up into the lead and Locey moving up into second.
