LOOKING BACK
It was 40 years ago this week that Marty Moates became the first
American to win the 500cc Motocross Grand Prix at Carlsbad Raceway
in what was one of the greatest races in U.S. motocross history. The
little-known Moates, a local rider from San Diego riding a privateer LOP
Yamaha, beat the world's best motocrossers after winning both motos.
He was pictured in action on the cover. American Danny LaPorte was
second overall... We interviewed Patricia Zonker, the author of the book
Murdercycles.

"Cleavage and Coors and Clemente," was the caption used to describe
our photo that graced the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago. The photo
accompanied our coverage of the Dirt Diggers' 3rd Annual All States
Scrambles Championship in San Clemente, California. Preston Petty was
the star of the day... Dave Sehl won the Charity Newsies AMA National
Half Mile in Columbus, Ohio... We covered Eddie Mulder's win at the
National TT in Hinsdale, Illinois.
