Corona, CA (714) 735-7721 Little Kern environmental statement published ' PORTERVILLE, CA The Little Kern Environmental Statement has been completed with few revisions, announced Sequoia National Forest Supervisor John A. Leasure. The statement describes eight land use management options as well as a recommended land use plan for the 112,000 acre area in the Sierra Nevadas east of Porterville, California. The land use plan recommended by the Forest Service includes the following: Designation of 440 acres more of Wilderness Study Area in the northern half of the planning unit bringing the total to 49 ,440 acres; Trail access area was reduced by by 440 acres bringing the total to 18,160 acres with the trails open to trail bikes on designated trails in the southern portion of the planning unit ; Designation of a 44,200 acre area in the sou thwest portion of the unit for optimum timber production ; Allowing campground develop. ment at Grey and Trout Meadows ; An area reserved at Jordan Peak for a possible ski development ; Emphasis given to preservation of Little Kern Golden Trout by pro· viding an additional protection along their habitat ; Construction of a two- lane paved road to Trout Meadow ; and Development of a self-guided nature trail in the Freeman Creek Redwood Grove, " T h e recommended plan for implementation was developed after considering public response to the draft environmental statement issued last November," said Leasure. "The major changes in the draft statement were the inclusion of the Grasshopper Flat area in the Wilderness Study area, provision of additional protection to the Little Kern Golden Trout habitat, and maintenance of a corridor along the road to Trout Meadow to retain a natural experience and encourage dispersed recreation use. " Continuing. Leasure said , "It is important to remember that a land management plan is an allocation of land to various management activities. It is not a schedule for implementation. The specific management activities undertaken will depend on current needs and financial support." Over 1.600 copies of the Little Kern Environmental Statement have been mailed to interested persons. By July 25 , 1977 comments on the Little Kern Environmental Statement BRENTWOOD, CA,JULY 8 Robbie Webster (Yam) came all the way from Santa Clara to give last week's winner in the 100 Novice class, Gary Johnson , some stiff competition. Johnson tried hard to beat Webster but just could not make the pass. Johnson did win in the Mini Intermediates, however, In Division I of the 125 Novice class, the "Kawasaki Kid, " Mike Brown took the win. After problems some time ago , Brown now has all the bugs out of his Kaw and he won both motos, with Dave Bollenback coming in second. In Division II , Geoffrey Ma rtins ran fourth in th e first moto but in the final. he was rea lly on the gas and won overall. In the Open Novice race, Merle McCoy was back and had his big Yamaha 11 motor back together and was doing some fa nt astic slides while winning both motos with ease. Jerry Hall has improved very much; he got second th e first moto and was pushing McCoy but in the final moto he crashed and ran last. Open Expert Bob Sullivan is back to his winning ways after being off with a broken wrist. Sullivan won both motos, In the second moto , Joey Schlag led for about two corners but couldn't stop Sullivan. Gary Johnson won the Mini-Money race after a duel with Sherman Wong, Wong fell after a big chase and Harold Hudson on a Honda pu lled up fast on Johnson but couldn't make the pass, The Expert Veterans and O ld Timers were mixed and the race between Jim Hartbauer and Jack Lewis was really exciting. In the first moto Lewis was leading and Hartbauer went to go around on the big berm. Lewis slipped wide and both riders went over the berm. Charging hard. they both were back on the track with Lewis winning, In the second moto it was almost a repeat but Hartbauer went high on the berm and Lewis drifted wide and Jim went under for the pass. Lewis was right on him and tried to 'p ass in the big corner but both collided and Hartbauer stayed in for the win. • Results in Results Section.
