The event here wasn't really affe cted all that m uch by the yearly Ma mm o th Mou nta in spectacle because some top ta lent was on ha nd to pu t u p a bat tle for the big b ucks . Playing th e hero's role tod ay was J eff W ard . W ard had been riding the machines of his J eff Ward Ra cing Produ cts and has had much success . but now his company has merged with FMF so Ward does a ll of his winning wit h their jersey on . Ward ca me out of the pa rk wit h three wins: Mini Pro. 100 Pro and 125 Pro classes. When he went to the fron t office to pick up h is money. it tota led close to $300; not bad for a d ay's work! In t he 125 Pro race . there were 18 riders on t he start ing g ate and all wer e hungry for th e cash award . The first moto was a dead give-awa y of who was to be th e day 's victo r because Ward's No. 4X Honda was in first place 10 ou t of 10 laps. Tim Locey (Yam) was th e runner -up . holding hi s own in th e seco nd -place spo t for th e dis ta nce . Tim Mu rphy seemed very sta ble in th ird till just two laps to go when Greg Barrett (Su z) overt urned him and took t hird. In t he second a nd final mot o , th e FMF flyer soared out a head perfectly straight from the start and went for 10 st raight first -place laps. Whittie r Hond a fast guy Pa t Delligatt a was in second place until he went down . From there . Locey was on the ga s and he la nd ed the closest posi tio n behind Ward . in front of long-time pro Ray Lopez. Overall for th e 125 Pro class . Ward with a perfect 1-1 fin ish na turally d eserv ed th e ro ll of m on ey. Loc ey settled in second overall rig ht above Ra y Lop ez. • Results in Results Sect ion. Corona MX: Miller takes 8reker in tie breaker By Elaine J on es CORONA. CA . JULY 1 A warm summer evening greeted spectators and com petito rs alike as the second week of riding the Corona MX in reverse got under way. The promot ers take the view that cha ngi ng th e course gives the riders less of a cha nce of getting it down pa t. How long they continue to run the new way is any body's guess. Marty Miller and Goa t Breker got a cha nce to go at each ot he r and t he outcome of the 250cc Pro was a tie with th e nod going to Miller . W it h Miller in front . Breker ha d to play ca tc h up and he d id just that on t he fourth la p on th e hillside. Now th e situat ion was reversed and it was Miller in the come from beh ind slot . Miller d idn 't m ake it and Breker had the first m oto victory. Mot o two had Miller again ou t in front and th is time he was th er e to sta y. He a lso picked up th e win at th e right time and came out with t he ove r a ll. Don Glover n ipped Jim Lawson by one po int for the third. Steve Bauer gave Miller a run for his mon ey in th e first moto of th e 125cc Pro. Bau er wen t wire to wire wit h Miller a co n vinci ng secon d . The second rnot o saw Miller on top with Steve Shippy seco nd a nd Dou g Li nco ln th ird. Bau er was back in fou rt h . Bau er and Breker took each other on in t he Open Pro a nd had themselves a pretty good go . Breker went wire to wire the first rnoto with Bauer second and Keith Fearing third . In th e second moto it was Bauer out on top followed by Brek er and Fearing . Trouble struck Bauer on the fourth la p when he go t a fla t tire a nd what cou ld have been a sweet victory turned into a bitter d efea t as Breker clai med the go ld while Bau er came u p with a DNF . CA , JULY 3 Mid- Valley's team of Greg Robertson, Tony DeLaTorre , Tracy Oswell and ~onte McCoy put together two firsts , a second and a third to dominate the California Racing Club (C RC ) motocross at Indian Dunes. The main target of their attack was th e 250 Expert class. Robertson , DeLaTorre and Oswell came off the line in that order and stayed there through both motos . McCoy took both Open Expert holes hots and emerged th e winner. National Women's champ Su e Fish took o n the 125 Intermediates. battling constantly with Da ve Vieioso, who end ed up t he winner. Fish took second ahead of John Birges and Da vid Manhire. Ma rk Lawren ce and T im Locey put on a good show in the 125 Expert class. Lawrence took the holeshot and led for a couple of laps. Loce y got by bu t it wasn 't long before Law rence was leading again . Third went to Craig Col e . who was followed by Ga ry Scheidler and Bill Barlow . Bobby Jones , who recen tly returned from rac ing in the East, could onl y manage a sixth. • Results in Results Section. Lawson wins crash and burn Corona Invitational By Elaine Jones CORONA , CA . JULY 4 . The l O-man field that went to the line for the exhibition half mile at Corona Raceway on the Fourth ofJuly gave the standing room onl y, predominately stock caroriented crowd one heck of a show . The track which had been fine during pract ice had become very slick during the interm ission and this set the stage for some wild action . The field drawing for positon had a two line st art. It was Tim McWhorter who took the ea rly lead with Wayne Rainey. Mike Minnig and Dylan Neihart mak ing up the top four. Coming into tu rn t hr ee on the first lap , Dave Peters ran into trou ble and Danny Perkins, with nowhere to go , lost it and headed for th e wall .The red flag came out and when the machinery was separated from the riders, Peters and Perkins were finished for the night. The restart again saw McWhorter get th e jump on th e field with Eddie Lawson. Ra iney , and Minnig - In th e top four slots. It took Ra in ey t wo la ps to catch McW ho rter as bo th he a nd La wson shot undernea th to put them in th e top two spots. Rainey lost it less tha n a lap Geoff Sanborn (411 temporarily led Steve FeId 13 after getting the DeAnza 11 250 Intermediate first mota holeshot. la ter. going into tu m three and Da ve Lujan was too close to get out of the way wh ich caused the red flag to come out once again: Damage was sufficient to elimi na te both and a single file resta rt was called. Lawson took it from there with the battle falling to McWhorter and Minnig. Minnig took McWhorter on the white flag lap and p ut the lock firml y on second . McWhorter held off Neihart to collect third . • Feld takes DeAnza Intermediates By Ron Lawson SUNNYMEAD , CA ,JULY 10 DeAnza's 250 Intermediates are always highly competitive. However, Steve Feld wasn't told that. He took his KTM to first overall , Steve Feld made winning the DeAnza 250 Intermediate race look easy. making it look almost too easy. In moto one, Geoff Sanborn got the holeshot , but Feld passed him immed ia tely. Mike Taylor was holding down th ird on his Kawasalti. In the early laps, nothing changed aside from th e size of Feld's lead , which was continually expanding. Ray McNeil (Oss). who got off to a bad ' stan, moved into founh on the third lap, and slowly began to gain on . the leaders. His job was made easier when Sanborn fell on the fifth lap. Unfortunately, the Ossa pilot was the next one to experience difficulty. A short time before the end of the race, he crashed and fell back to fifth. Feld won with a considerable lead, followed by Taylor and Jack Stark (Bul). In round two , Feld was way out front again and Sanborn was once m ore in second. T aylor was in third and , to make the duplication of moto one com plete, McNeil got off to another rott en stan. Sanborn stayed in second all t he way through this tim e and McNeil could work up no farther thanfounh. It was in the last round that bad luck seemed to hit hardest . Sanborn got a bad stan a nd couldn't make up the distance. Taylor, who was in second, endoed while trying to catch the disappearing Feld. He got up quickly. only to find that one of his shocks had assumed a totally new shape. His bike was unridable, so he loaded it up and sat out the rest of the race. McNeil was now in second and he seemed to be slowly closing on Feld, Behind him, Tom Ruvolo (Mai), who had broken a shifter in moto one, was h olding third against Sanborn . Sanborn pressed hard throughout the race, but still finished behind the bright-red Maico. Feld won once more, but McNeil wasn't so far behind. Second overall went to McNeil dispite his poor placings in the first two motos. Third went to Sanborn. Results in Results Section. 33
