losing tracti on when his fro nt wh eel
slip ped awa y. " I was already off th e
brake and on the gas and t hen I was
down. It happened so quick tha t th er e
was no tim e to save it. Damn . I th ink I
could have won ."
Nix on went back into th e lea d with
a nine-second lead over Jimmy Allen
and Schla cter -wit h Springer and
Coleman a distant fourth a nd fifth .
Tuner Kevin Cameron had been
forced to cha nge th e top end and
barrels of Schlacter 's engine when it
developed detonation in his hea t and
Rich was feeling the problems of being
down on pow er .
Nixon began to slow around the
halfwa y fla gs dropping a lmost a
second off his lap times on su ccessive
laps as All en and Schlacter edged
closer.
Allen took over th e lead ha lfwa y
through lap 22 wh en Nixon's clutch
ca b le expired completely. " I spent two
laps seeing if it would shift alright
without the clutch and th en turned th e
gas back on." sai d Ga ry lat er.
On lap 26 N ixon regained the lead
and never rel inquished it.
On th e fina l lap N ixon held a threesecond lead wh ile th e Allen/Schlacter
duel had the crowd cheering. Schlacrer
pulled Allen up th e h ill to take second
as the pair disappeared into bow l
sha ped turn eight. Schlacter held to
turn n ine where Allen took back
second . Side. ~ y side d own the pit
straight . the pair set up for the fina l
turn with Allen getting the drive a nd a
safe margin at the flag .
