The Turkey class seems to be a class tha t is a lways growing and is a class for t he beginner as well as the old timer. Gary Racca (Yam) ca me down from Tacoma 10 give him a run for a few la ps, but Gregson di aled away in both 125 rno ros 10 tap t he till co nvi nc ing ly. The 250 Pro class ca me off the lin e in the first moto with Ron Dim eo (S uz) ge tt ing the holeshot . Dim eo held on for a th ird of th e moto in th e lead but Gregso n finall y got by 10 tak e th e win . T ro y Folck (Ma i) ran well to pick off a third . The seco nd mot o saw Dim eo aga in get a very good sta rt but was no t ab le 10 fen d off a d et erm in ed G regso n a nd they finishe d th at way agai n. The O pen Pro cla ss was a litt le mo re d ifficult for Gregson . Monrey Mitch ell (Ka w), who j ust two weeks ago was ru nning a Maico , was gi ven G regso n's old O pen class Kawa saki by th e peopl e of Ka wasaki citv in Portla nd . Barney Newm a n (Hus) was also th ere an d he got by for a second in th e first motu. The second moto was a differ ent story as Gregson got a mu ch bett er stan a nd led just ab out th e whole thing exce p t for t he shor t time Newm a n held the lead . Kentner tops Deschutes Open Pros By Brad Stankey BEND. OR , J UNE 5 The biggest class of th e day at Deschutes Cycle Park and th e o ne that was doing the most' dicing and bar banging was th e 125 Junior cla ss. In first moto act ion it was Mark Jon es (Suz) , Allen Gr aves (Suz) and Mike Daniel (Yam ) wh o wanted the win , with Jones end ing up with th e c heckered nag . In th e seco nd mot o, it was J oe McCorm ic (H us) taking th e win with Scott Zettle (Ho n) second , Dan iel third a nd Mark Jon es fourth . This gav e the overa ll win to Jones, with McCormi c taking secontj pla ce and thi rd going to Scott Zett Ie , First motu ac tio n in the Open Pro class saw some aggressive riding as Da ve Shepa rd (Suz) , rid ing for Sav -on Cycle, got the hotshot over Rod Ken t ne r (Yam) , riding for S&S Yamaha and Grizzley Bea r Pizza . and Mi tch Kirkpatri c (Yam) . riding for Sessier Inc . Kirkpa tric took over t he night racing. The first expert moto had a full field of Open and 250 Experts. Joey Schlag , th e l-t- year-old expert in th e 250 class has neve r had com pet it ion like there was Friday night. Sch lag led t he first rnoto and won with ease . The battle was for second . wit h Ma nn p assin g R ick Lewis. Then Ma nn wor ked on J im H artb a uer , finally passing hi m . It look ed like he was on his wav to 'ca tching Sch lag , but Ha rt bau er f~ u nd tra ct ion over the center j um p a nd passed Mann . Mann was trying to go back by H art ba uer but h it his wheel and killed his motor. Everyone sta yed for t he seco nd mot o , We had some ext ra tim e so the se co n d m o t o r an 15 la p s ; th e spe ctators stayed glue d to t he fence . Sc hlag took the lead and was way out fro nt for 15 laps. Man n. Hart ba uer and Lewis were really racin g . Mann finally got by Hartbauer and was working on Lewis, but Lewis got back by . Around th e l Oth lap. S chlag started d rifting to the far outside and seemed to be losin g ground and it looked like Lewis a nd Mann cou ld get by. Bu t Schlag , a very ca lm and cool rider , kept o n going fast and too k the second moto too for the win . Sch lag is now riding for Cycle Town of San Ra fel. Tim Nobl es finall y put it together in th e 125 N ovi ce division. R an d y McGinnis won th e first moto with Mike Ch auncey second and Nobles ge tt ing third . So Nob les was pumped for the seco nd mot o . He got t he hol eshot and won overall. _ Tony Sh ipm an took second in th e first rnoto of th e 250 Int er med iat e di vision so he knew he had to do som eth ing to ca ncel out Gary Moyer's first m ot o win . It wasn 't ea sy. but Sh ipm an made it - a close first in the seco nd moto for the win . Byro n Estes (Yam) took first overa ll in t he 100 Nov ice d ivisio n and is no w the point leader in th e six-week series which ends after one mo re Fri da y nig ht.
