Nixon began to slow around the halfwa y fla gs dropping a lmost a second off his lap times on su ccessive laps as All en and Schlacter edged closer. Allen took over th e lead ha lfwa y through lap 22 wh en Nixon's clutch ca b le expired completely. On th e fina l lap N ixon held a threesecond lead wh ile th e Allen/Schlacter duel had the crowd cheering. Schlacrer pulled Allen up th e h ill to take second as the pair disappeared into bow l sha ped turn eight. Schlacter held to turn n ine where Allen took back second .
