MAY 8 Ever since November of 1975 , Shawn Smith has been mending from serious internal injuries suffered in a fall whil e leading the 125 Experts at Whitn ey. T od ay at Oak Hill , almost a year and a half later , th e Dallas speedster was b ack to his old tri cks again , goi ng WFO and winning that- same cla ss. The loss of a 50 kid ney and spleen apparently hasn't .. a ffec te d h is flamboyant st yle or J throttle hand . b Mike Hullett was chasing Smith in '(t he first moto , but endoed at the lOp of fourth gc;a r, bounced up , and grinned " Gee, that hurt!" Seeing that Smith '(Suz) was unattended in th e lea d o positi on , Hullett pulled in behind him wh en he came around, just to keep h Shawn from getting bored , The pair p ut on qu ite a show whi le some real b racing for second was eventually taken b by Kansan Randy Kirs chbaum over ~ Sea n O'Brien and Mike Brownlee , all _ on Suzukis, Randy Tart r of th e T ES T eam look ed good for a double win in 250 a nd Open Expert , but while leading the first Open m ot o , he got crossed up in th e middle of a double j um pd ropaw ay section and tumbled off th e downhill . The doo r. th en opened for Chris Dublin (Ma i) a nd Dana Wright (Bu l), who took 1-2 overall, as Tarter bounced back in th e final to coll ect third . Aboard a Can -Am in the 250 class, Tarter left little doubt , sweeping both races over Okie Jim Thomas (Suz), Randy Kirschbaum (Suz), and Bobby Kyle (Bul). The day's best trophy race was in Division 11 of 125 Novice , as th e Yamahas of Kyle Hughes and Jessi e Wilson moved almost as one in th e closing laps of the secOlid moto . Wilson had won the opener, but Hughes held h im off to the checkers for a 2-1 first. overall: Mini ace Darin Eames, II , took second in the first heat of 125 Novice Division I, b ut something broke in the final. Not bad for first time on a 125 . Incidentally, it was a 125 engine in an RMIOO bike , _ ideal for a shorter rider. In th e 125 Pro race Stan Wynhoff gra bb ed t he lead whi ch was short lived as Copier a nd Randy Sargent took over the top two p laces . At the finish of rnot o one Co p ie r h ad the win with Sargent seco nd . In th e seco nd 125 round Copier cou ld n't make th e start lin e because of illness . whi ch left th e battle for the tit le a nd cash ro Sargent a nd th e ot hers. In th e 250 Pro cla ss David Mech am sco red th e overall victory whil e David Wood a nd David Bohlm cas hed in with seco nd and th ird spot m on ey. The start of the Open Pro race saw th e red Mai co of Don Gibbs grab the lead but four-stroke Honda rider Pet e Watson gor by for the lead . W illson put on a good show until he crashed a nd handed first over to Randy Evans with John G reenway close behind in second . Befo re t he race e nd ed Greenway slipped by Evans for the victory.
