Steve Smith of Houston took second in the 410 Cafe (seventh overall) on a 410 Prod uction Yamaha and Gerry Rei mer, also of Houston , was first novice in that race . Duncan · P a ul from A rlington, Texas, passed Freddie Spencer in the fourth lap of the 125 Grand Prix and held that position through the fifth lap. Spencer finally managed to fight his way into the lead in the sixth goround and won . Paul took second place and . after a quick pit stop. jumped back on his Yamaha and lined up for the 200 Grand Prix . H e started with a heavy lead on the pack and finished first with David Cheek in seco nd place on a Can-Am. Out of Beaumont. Texas. Tommy Byers also dueled Freddie Spencer in the 250 Grand Prix . Byer s took first from Spencer in a " photo fin ish" and Hugh Humble pulled a close th ird . All three racers rode Yamahas. Byers had a good day with another vict ory in the Open Grand Prix. W O RTH, TX , MAY 6 The Ross Downs Short Track may have to..install.pho to finish equipment if this keeps up. Tonight's 250cc Feature Main saw the closest finish ever between local pros Mike Green and Terry Poovey, and following 10 laps of lead -swapping at each other end of the V4 -rnile banked oval, Poo vey found a hair more drive out of the last turn to nip Green at the line by about the width of his front Goodyear. Besides the two super riders involved , the. battle also pitted two rival Bulta co shops' prize machines. Glen Waters of Dallas Bultaco Sa les and Les "The Vulture" Stultz of Bultaco Unlimited can both be justly proud of their chargers. with the Poovey- Waters combo winning this time in one of the best races in recent Downs history. Going for third and getting it was Bobby Elliott on a Can-Am special. followed by Ronnie Jones (Yam) and Buck Boren (Yam) . G reen may have lost a heartbreaker in the 250. but picked up first place bucks in the Open class on a big Norton , with Trophy Da sh winner B u ck Bore n (Tri) and Dan ny Cartwright (Yam ) trailing. Oklahoma riders swept the 125cc Main , with Scott Adams, Dave Bradley, and Kreg Hunt showing the way . Steve Perdue's Dad went from a near coronary to whoops of joy when Steve dove under and passed Roger Schellenberger in the last two turns of the 100cc Main , with Scott Adams a length back finishi ng third . David Langley cha lked up anothe r 85cc win, as did Bret Rose nb urg in the 65cc final, and even the spectators won, with a bunch of good . dou ble t hrowdown flat rrackin' to watch . It 's hard to miss when you 've got a good track and the best skidders from three states every Friday night. Results in Resu lts Sectio n . (Ya m) placed second with Perry Clark (H on) in third . The Super Mini class proved to be a real crowd pleaser. Floyd Ro bbins and R ussel Gage battled throughout the first moto . Robbins took the win on ly inches ahead of Gage. In the second round, Gage grabbed the holeshot arid held t h e lead throughout the entire moto giving him first overall . Robbins ha d to settle for third behind th e consistent rides of Joel Stone (Yam) . The hot 100 rider , Rod ney Womack (Hon) , again sm oked the class on his Flying W Honda . Jimmy Capt a lso on a Flying W was second ahead of Billy Horak (Yam). Womack foll owed up his 100 class vict o ry by taking th e sam e machine and dominating th e 125 Jun ior class races. R ichard Startz (H on) put in a great ride to go froni last place to fourth in th e fir st rnoro and followed it up in the second with a second fini sh fo r secord overa ll. J imm y Sandvig ( Ya m) pla ced th ird and M ik e McDaniel fourth . The Open Expert class proved to be th e race of th e day. W ith St eve Wi se absent the rest of the experts had a real battle for th e win . J immy Strait brought o ne of hi s own prepared Hondas to take first. In a dog -fight for second over a ll. Nick Castillo (Yam) and Ruben Ramos (Yam ) traded th e second and third place spots throughout the entire second moto that saw Castillo regain third place on the next to last lap to insure second overall. Ramos settled for third and Larry H ug hes ( H o n), after a good showing in the first m o to , was slowed by a flat tire in the second round, took fuurth . • Resu lts in Resu lts Section. Woodward gets revenge at S.R.A.C. MX By linda Donelson LAKEWOOD , CO , MA Y 22 Running qualifiers is one answer for too -large classes at any motocross event. The new S. R .A .C. scoring system only counts the m ain event . so it got interesting wh en 28 riders bonzaied out of the gate , In 125 Novice . 49 riders showed up . Randy Warren (H o n) ha s really been putti'!g it to them lately. usually winning both his qualifier and main -" . But this Sunda y, Warren had to settle for second overa ll. Warren won his qua lifier. walking aw ay , but the main proved a different story. Kent Moore (Su z) jumped out in front early and never let go . Warren was second , with Brian Patrick (Yam) in third . 250 Amateur again saw Mark Woodward (Yam Denver) and Ru sty Latimer (Town & Co untry Suz) rubberband for position.
