This was quite believable- due to all the DNFs that were blamed on the heat . Danny Turner, riding a Franks machine, also from the cool woods of Placerville claimed . the second place money in the 125 class. Out of town favorites , Warren Reid for team Honda, and Gary Ogden FMF, both had bad luck in the main after doing well in the qualifier. Reid swapped off on the high speed straight and was knocked out while trying to get up to the front of the pack after a bad start in the first 125 moto. Ogden only made two laps in the same race before going down as a DNF. Another favorite , Ron Turner FMF , took fourth both times around for fourth overall. Phil Crane (Suz) from Martinez took the third place cash after borrowing a bike from Laine West who gave up his ride to help Phil , out. Donnie Cantaloupi, (FMF) cashed out in fifth place in the 125 Pros. He was followed in both times by Scott Karl (Suz) and Danny Dennis (Hon) who were paid sixth and seventh with Pat Yoho (Yam) claiming the eighth and final paying position. Mike Bell, overall winner, only finished fifth in the first 250 run with Magoo (before being injured), Greg Robertson (Oss), Warren Reid (before being injured) and Ogden in front of him . Bell started at the back of the pack in the first moto and had some tough going to get to fifth . In the second try he had a better start and chased Dennis Brand (Suz) all the way to the white flag before taking over the lead and the overall win. Ogden did better in the 250 class taking second overall pay with two fourth finishes. Brand got the third place bucks and . Robertson fourth. Finishing third in the second moto put Mike Hersman on an Arnaco Shocks Husqvarna, in the money for fifth . Additional paying places went to ' Jerome Heiberger (Mai) , Rick ' Long (CA) and Tim Lunde (Yam). Top .money in the Open class went to Mike Bell, of Lakewood; on a DG Yamaha. Bell took the lead away from Richter in both motos as he I had to work his way to the front in both motos , with a smooth steady push. Bell also topped the 250 class making him the biggest winner of the day , With Bell in front at the checkered in both Open motos, and Richter right behind him , they both added to their previous cash-ins. Pa rry Klassen (Yam ) got third overall. After starting the first moto dead last he worked all the way up to a fifth place finish. Meanwhile Bell had lapped all th e way up to seventh place! Klassen had a much better start in the second moto and spent a number of laps swapping places with Richter , but ended up in . third at the end. Robert Myers (Mai), with a third and a fifth had the fourth overall. Henry Halbach (Mai), Jeff Shurtz (Mai) , Michael P~eston (KTM) and Skeet .Wyma n (Mal) also made money for their rides . The grand prize for the top sportsman of the two days (and three motos) had to be split. Going for the 250 Maico gOt the adrenelin flowing . and after the first two moros there were six riders with two first fin ishes each. Three of the six had led every lap of both motos, so at the start of the third round they were all out for th e lead right from the beginning to chalk up the leading laps. 125 Intermediate, Marvin Woods (Yam) from Orangevale, was the first of the three to make the attempt. He was second at the end of the first lap and seemed to . get reckless and tried so hard he went down several times, making it tougher every lap. He never made it into first and was out of the running, broken hearted. Next up was '250 Intermediate Kent Woods (no relation to Marvin) a 14 yea r old Suzuki rider from Santa Cruz. He succeeded in getting the lead in the first lap and holding out aga inst hea vy pressure all the way finally stretching' his lead to four seconds at the fin ish . Lance Beauchamp, Open Intermediate Husky rider from Carmichael had his work cut out for him. The best he could do would be to tie Woods , which he did , Beauchamp came off the line about fourth but made it to the front by the end of th e first lap and stayed out front all th e way. . Woods and Beauchamp, having both led every lap of all three rnotos were consulted abou t how they wanted to handle the tie . They agreed to sell the Maico and split the cash. A Maico dealer set the minimum value and they took bids over that and did sell the bike, each coming out with more cash than the firs t place Pros had collectedl Results in Results Section, Sullivan vs. Anderson at Sand Hill Ranch By Tura Houser BRENTWOOD, CA , MAY 20 The Trophy Dash was held for the intermediates and experts Fridaynight.
