Sunday was Amateur and Expert day. with 232 entries. 40 ri ders in the 250 Expert m eant qualifiers . Arlo Englund and Bill Ferneyhough , bo th back from the Nationals were ha rd to beat. A rlo. running his 250 Husky , went on to victory after bad starts in both motos . Bill Ferneyhough (Cent. Yam) and Roger Smith ( Vickery) promised to have th e ra ce of the day in Open Expert . Smith again go t the good sta rt he usually does and continued to ' hang on in the turns and out to the backstraight. Ferneyhough took over second pos it ion off the line and not far behind Smith . seemed to pace himself. ' knowing that he had 30 minutes to go . O ver the jumps. the off camber, th e long up hills . it looked like a string was attached to Smith and Ferneyhough as the d istance never see m ed t o change . Two laps ' t i l c h e c ke r e d and Ferneyhough made his move, darting' by Smith to take the lead and hold it to win. Second rnoto , Smith p ut all he had into trying to take and hold the lead . but couldn't quite pull it off as Ferneyhough again waited 'til the end to take the ove rall first for the day . • Results in Resu lts Section . David Chandler little surprise at big hill in Texas By Diane PolI~y MILLSA P . TX . MA Y 22 The first AMA National Cha m pionship Qualifier Hillclimb was run Ma y 22 at Millsap. Texas. The T exas Hillclimbers Associa tion had really worked hard to get th ings ready and it· pa id off. They had a bulldo zer co m pletely re b ui ld the 430 ·foot hill th at ha d lain fa llow fo r a yea r. The doz er ope ra to r must have been fea rless. H e put fou r steps in the hill . th e first two wer e very stee p a nd caused th e m ost tro uble . The last time the hill had been run it wa s a stra ight speed hill that was topped in six to eig h t seconds . T oday th-e sp eeds ranged from 15 seconds to nearly 30 se conds . Throt tl e co n t ro l and low gea ring wer e th e nam e of the game. A little dry weather cou ld make it even harder wh en all that packed clay turns into talcum powder. Because of the large number of ro ad riders watch ing an impromptu Best Dressed Bike co nt est was held at intermission. W . T . Lacy of the Fort Worth Hawks won the THA tee-shirt prize , Norman Delamor also received a shirt for' the slowes t time of over 29 :46 seco nds . To give the' riders trying to q u alify - m ore time for changes the club ran the qualifying 100 ·through-Open classes first . then the enduro and exhibition classes, and reversed the order after intermission , This seemed to work well and the riders appreciated the extra time. Of the nine states in District 6 Colorado . Oklahoma. Kansa s and T exas were represented . David ru ined that idea wh en he went over in t he 100 class o n a Honda XR75 th e fir st time h'i: attempted it. He also dealt a cruel blow to th e rest of the class who wer e all riding 100cc bikes wh en they did not get to see the top on this try . Troy B ullock on a Kawasaki finally managed to push David to second with a 19 .98 second tim e over ' David's 23 .53 , For a wh ile there was talk of no t lett ing Steve Hopkins and his dad . Bob. run on the hill. Steve tried three times before the clock wo rked for him and then on Bob's run the generator ran out of gas. All this happened in the 250 class. In the end it worked out alright and Steve got a second and Bob a fourth . Tom Hairston unveiled a unique 180 degree crank 750cc Triumph and · as usual there were still some bugs to b e worked out. It looks like J ack Wilson and Big 0 Cycles have done it aga in though. For th e -second climb in a row Will Alford and Gary Chandler were b a ttli n~ it ou t fo r top time. It looked like it was go ing to be close after th eir first ru ns but Will sewed th in gs u p with a tim e of 14.99 seco nds in th e 250 cl ass o n his second try. Limestone run speedway track opens in OK City Oklahoma City now has the only Va -m ile limestone racetrack designed exclusively for Speedway Racing in the Central United States. Stephenson of Dallas and Morrison of Fort Worth took first place in the C a fe . class and' were foll owed by Steve Darley and Andy Robbins. Houston boys riding an 850 Moto Guzzi. who took first in the Production class. Wall and Miller (850 M-G) placed second iri Production. Bucky Patterson . David Cheek and Henry Brigham . m o re road ra ce rs from Houston. used team effort to cruise in second in the Cafe on a 250 Can -Am, Team Deviate, composed of John Miick, Marty Bass and Vernon Davis. from Austin. Texas, were . holding a top position when David did his submarine imitation and tried to get under the pavement. Davis was not injured however., · and the team of Deviates moved up again taking fifth place in the Production class. T he racing weekend continued on Sunday along wit !J the beautifu l weather and a multitude of ra ce rs turned out o nc e again to rip around "the th ree m ile TWS course.
