._._._._._._._._.Cole m oved up fast, pushing Haugh back to fourth . Cole (Yam) was really flying trying to keep Haugh off his ta il. a n d in t he process moved 9n b y Oswell . In the second moto , Hal Strauss (Mon ·G. P. Cycles ) led the pack up the hill . where Schneller too k over the lead. Strauss held firmly to second. staying in close. Oswell was coming up .fast on Strauss but couldn't get by him before the finish line. First ove rall went to Schneller for back to back wins, second to Cole and third to Strauss. The 500 Pros had to be seen to be - believed. Monte McCoy took home the ' victory after overcoming, insurmount· able odds , In the first moto, he ran into trouble at the line and started off dead last . 25 seconds .behind the rest of the pack. Stev e Stas iefski , a test rider for Maico led the pack up the hill an d held the lead until overtaken by Donnie Hansen (Yam-Int, M IG). Hansen set up a beau tiful lead with Jeff Loft running second; Rich Varvel in third . Stasiefski moved back into fourth. McCo y was rea lly moving up and fas t - now in fourth and working on th ird . challenging Varvel. He passed Va rvel and closed fast on Loft . Passing Loft gave him a shot a t Hansen with 14 seconds between them . Hansen was riding WFO , knowi ng McCoy was rthere and held his pos ition 'til t he end of the moto. In the second moto, McCoy shot off the line and ran a strong first. Loft was running second . Hansen collided with an other rid er in fr ont of the tower. After remoun ting, he was r eally moving , going quickly to third . Hansen then had moved into second and was airborne , out to catch McCoy. Loft was staying close to Hansen and Tom Claire and Randy McCoy were I having their own duel for fourth . com ing by the towe r side by side. 1 McCoy held onto fourth with Claire hot on his tail , until Claire went down vover a jump and cou ld n' t regain his ~position . At th e finish lin e McCoy J breezed across to first overall , Hansen took home second place money and thir d went to Loft. Michigan Bultaco factory rider Charles Coutard -scored his first victory in .world class competition in the American round of the Observed Trials World Championships. The victory vaulted the quiet Frenchman into fifth place in the championship standings with five ounds to go. Coutard finished the first of two 25 section loops tied with Marland Whaley for the lead, but then backed up his initial nine marks lost with a sensational 13 for the second loop to give him a clear victory. . Martin placed fourth in the American round after a tightly fought duel with Mark Eggar that saw the awarding of the position based on the number of cleans chalked up during the event. In all , Bultaco filled five of the top 10 finishing positions.
