Twenty year old (Above) Rounding one of the downhill corners at AME's High Sierra MX. (Above rightl Showoff and 125 Pro winner. Bobby Kline.IBelow) 125 Junior Division I winner Craig McConnack leads third-place Tom Tate. 22 ticks on a dog but Lawson was still holding both of them at bay. On the third lap Lawson had to go wide as they came into the infield to avoid a down rider and Jean was able to slip underneath. The hole was quickly filled by Lawson so Miller was still in third spot. The battle continued for the next three laps with Miller trying to get a line on the inside, outside or even over the top but Jean and Lawson weren't having any. When the checkered came out Miller had to be content with third to Jean and Lawson. The second moto had Jean .off on top with Miller second and Lawson third. By the end of one Miller was sitting in his usual position in front but not the usual lead he is used to enjoying. On two Jean went down and although he was up quick he lost ground and was pretty much out of it. Lawson continued to dog Miller but couldn't find the chink in his armor and had to settle for second with Jean getting third. It was a three-way tie for first with Miller getting the nod with the second moto win. Lawson came up with the-second with Jean third. After last week's wild and woole y 125cc Pro racing this week would have to be called sedate. Marty Mill er led wire to wire in both motos with Chris Dooley and Doug Lincoln following him home . Goat Breker got a bit of a surprise' in the 500cc Pro Class and it came from very close to home. The first moto wass Goat's from start to fin ish with his Norstar-Dallas Baker-KTM . teammate , Keith Fearing in second. The big surprise came in the second rnoto when Keith decided that second wasn 't good enough and he broke on top with Goat stuck back . in fourth behind Kelly Callaway and Carl Gieselman. While Breker was picking his way through traffic Fearing was gamely hanging on to the top spot and continued to do so until th fourth lap when Breker caught up with him and took over the lead , not only passing Fearing but Callaway in the process. Fearing hung on to the second spot one more lap before Callaway took him on the white flag lap and brought it on home in a KTM sandwich. The overall ended in the same order. • Results in Results Section . Craig Adams won the first of the two half hour heats with a 55 second lead over Martin. Then , again in the second heat , Adams jumped out front with an impressive lead but at the end of the first lap it became apparent he was in trouble. His lead began to dwindle and he was passed first by Martin then by Gary Bates who had finished second and third in the first race. Adams, who had earlier stated "T his is my kind of cou rse - fast rough and not much asphalt." showed why he is rated one of SRAs fastest Open Experts by completing the 25 mile race on a flat rear tire and earning a second overall. In the 101 to 200cc heat, novice Yamaha LT. rider Steve Brown really gave Jeff 'Goat' Hollie a run for his money . In the curves and rough stuff, 17 year old Hollies experience really paid off but as soon as the pair hit the asphalt and straightaways, the new LT. proved to be the faster machine. This was one of the most exciting races of the day as the boys see-sawed back and forth for the entire five laps with Brown winning the second heat and Hollie winning overall. The thrill of victory was super sweet for Rod Fowler who raced" his first time ever as a 250 Beginner, but for senior favorite, Gary Auberlin, it was the agony of defeat when he threw a chain in the first race and had a DNF in the second. The girls did their part and as soon as Vicki Miller Haag finished racing in the 201 to 250cc class with the men, she jumped in the womens race-where she just barely scooted by I I plate holder, Louise Bates. Both girls commented that it was the best race either had ever ridden. Two unsung heros, Gary Hambrice , flagman, and Debbie Kendricks , number taker, had their hands full at the finish line when riders tried to follow th e old course , which was a sharp right tuni' 'rat her than the new sharp left . And under th e circumstances both did an incredible job . Debbie never missed a number and Gary never lost his cool, even when riders tried to use him for traction . Especially Senior Expert Bob Berdyck who literally pushed a rider . around the tum while trying to outrun Adam Padilla who was racing his Maico with 6 broken spokes and a slightly flat looking wheel. Padilla who used to be a Honda factory rider, just ' switched to the Maico and it looks like they 'll be quite a team as Padilla beat Dave Crowfoot and Berdyck in both senior heats. Another exciting race of the day existed between amateur Don Glover. who wore a Yamaha jersey and rode a KTM, and amateur Lance Tubbs on a Yamaha . Tubbs won the first heat , lost to Glover in the second in a great battle. These boys rea lly show how its supposed to be done. As Gary Sigman says "The days of cherry pickin are over. SRA has a whole new list of "Hot Dogs" and they are burnin doors." • Results in Results Section. Kline, Schneller and McCoy win first AME High -Sierra M X By Lee Taylor BISHOP, CA , MAY 29 Bob Kline (FMF) took the 125 Pro class for top money at the first annual yearly A.M .E. High Sierra MX In the first moto , Rick Hulsizer grabbed the holeshot . but was overtaken by Kline in the first ·turn . It was extremely tight for second between Danny Thompson and Bo.b Ramsey (Yam-Cycle Shack). Ramsey moved into second while Andy Jannings , in fourth, was moving up fast and challenging Thompson. From second place on back it was anyone's race. Kl ine had a wide -open lead, digging deep into the berms and driving spectators crazy with out of sight cross-ups on the down hill. Jerry Shore was running fifth and looking sharp, as he is recovering from a knee injury , as Jannings was holding in tighl in fourth . Kline still had an unbelievable lead with Ramsey in sec ond . Jannings. coming into a sweeper turn , moved up fast and took over third . Shore was in fifth and moving up fas t on Thompson . He passed Thompson . and th en set out for Jannings , pass ing him . His next target was Ramsey. Back in th e pack , Wes Norton . who sta rted out in las t place , with trouble on th e line , now moved into th ird . An unbelievable j ob of moving up! Shore went by Ramsey and was soaring until he hit back stretch and lost a ch ain. setting him wa y back in the pack. Klin e fin ished th e .m oto with the same wide-open lead he held t hrougho ut. Norton m oved in for sec on d and Thompson held third . The second time around , Kline again grabbed th e lead and this tim e Norton was behind him . Jannings was running . th ird with Thompson in fourth and Shore in fifth . The riders spread out . a bit and held their pos itions throughout th e moto . At th e finish line Kline sailed across to first overall. second went to Norton ami third to Thompson . Sherman Schneller (Suz-S .M.
