MAY 22 Mark White took home top money in the 500 Pros in A.M .E.'s $1 ,000 purse race at Indi an Dunes . Riding a H usqva rn a for Simi Yamaha , White was inc red ib ly smooth and fast. In the firs t mota , his battle was with Steve Rawson for second. Donnie Hansen (Ya m -Int . M/C) had a wide open lead . Whi te got by Rawson for seco nd and set out to break down Hansen 's lea d . Hansen held his lead with Wh ite finis h ing seco nd. The second m ota was the cliff hanger of the dayl Hansen started out -. with t he lead but ran into trouble and fell back to last place. White was leading with Will Harper, Rusty Hunt and Rawson running second. third and fourth, Coming down the back stretch Rawson got by Hunt briefly. th en Hunt grabbed his position b ack again . Bill Hagen m oved on up into fourth and T om Claire (Mal -Mike's Racing Center) was running fif th a nd fl yingl Moving int o third , he ricocheted off the berms. to uc hing t he track long enough to co me up behind H arper an d pass. Hansen moved into th ird , goi ng wide in th e sweeper, overta king Harper. Hansen was now one bik e's length behind Cla ir e a nd putting unbelievabl e p ressure on him . Coming a long th e fence lin e , Claire a nd Hansen were side by side. H ansen fina lly got by co m ing up ou t of the sa ndwash a nd went ou t to ca tc h Wh ite . W ith 10 m inutes to go , Wh ite 's lea d had been na rrowed to n in e seco nds . Hansen knew he had to ca tch White for a firs t. By the time th e chec ke red flag ca m e out, H ansen had na rr owed Whit e's lead some wha t but n ot eno ug h .' Wh it e eme rg ed th e victo r . H ansen took hom e second overa ll and third went to Rawson . In th e 125 Intermed iat e race , Jim Co te (Suz-U. S. Suz ) held off some fo r mi d a b le co m pe ti ti o n for firs t overa ll. The first moto saw a battle betwee~ Cot e and Scott Mor gan for first. Morgan had th e lead with Cot e runn ing second . Dav e LaBrot (YamT ire Man) was running thi rd and movin g up fa st. Morgan started to d rop back as Cot e swept by him in fro nt of th e finish lin e and LaBrot m oved into second . On the white flag lap , LaBrot inc he d by Cote for the first moto win . T he second m ota was full of surprises. At the start ' Cote was way back in th e p ack and Morgan went down . Mike Marshall (Suz·D&G) had the lead and was flying. Rob Healy, who had fin ish ed way back in the pack in the first moto was run n ing second with Bill S ekeres (S u z-A ir co n e) . running a strong th ird. Greg T orgerson d isplaced Sekeres for th ird. th en passed Healy for second . Meanwhile , Greg Ta ylo r (Ho n- Aircone) was d oing som e fancy riding. Fini shing 10th in his first mota a nd ou t to do everyth ing he could to im p ro ve his position, he st a rt ed moving up through th e pa ck of 24 rid er s. Now . in fourth, T ay lor was putting pressure on Heal y for third . Marshall wa s st ill . secure with a wide open lead a nd th e du el going into th e white flag lap wa s between Torg erso n and Heal y for seco nd . Head ing down th e fen ce line for the chec ke red T aylo r was br eathing down Heal y's jers ey, less th an one bik e's len gth behind him and Heal y was sm oki ng the rubber right off of T orgerson 's tires, T hese three wer e inse p arab le right down to th e wire. But Cot e , wh o finished beh ind a ll th e act ion for th e to p few pl aces in th e secon d m ot o , sti ll had the point s for first overall. Sekeres finished second. The first rider to come around the 'sta rt turn was Randy Hess (FMF Han), Imm ediatel y behind Hess, also on an FMF machine, was Gary Ogden. Terry Sch ekell (Yam). Brian My erscough ( R &D) . Mike Tripes (Yam) a nd Broc Glover (Yam) had the nex t slots . On th e third lap . Ogden had the lead and Hess was right on his rear tire . Myerscough and Glover were scrambling to see who would be in third . As Ogden and Hess came off the downh ill . they locked bars sending them both to th e ground , Myerscough took over the lead until Glover grabbed it awa y from him . Ron Turner (FMF) had worked his way through traffic to take over t h ird . Pet e Wanket (Yam) and Tripes diced for fourth . Ogden , Cliff Lett (FMF) and Jeff Tomlin (H a n ) filled the next positions. _ Myerscough exploded off the line for a sensational holeshot in the second moto . Turner. Pete Wanket , Lett . Hess and Tomlin followed the leader. Turner passed Myerscough on lap two, Glover, who got a less then perfect start in th e race, had work ed his way up from back in the pack to fourth by the halfway point. As th e pack of scr eaming bees came blasting around the hairpin turn and headed for the long set of whoops, Jeff Tom lin got a bit of a su rp rise when he landed . He and his H onda parted co m p any and th e Honda parted in two . T omlin was a bit chag rine d but unhurt . Glov er had now d isplaced
