Speedball Ro y King earned his amateur rating thi s day with a pa ir o f spiffy firsts, followed by Bullet Bill Lyons, gett ing tuned to Shadow Glen for a second , Only one point apart . CA , MAY 18 The Money Half Mile was a wild o ne going right down to the wire as Dan McWhorter, Garv Davis and Danny Perkins wen t for it. McWhorter was out on top with Perkins a nd Davis riding d ouble in second a nd third . On lap two Perkins slipped his two st ro ke Yam aha underneath McWhorter's big 750cc to take the lead , It was McWhorter's turn to play ca tch up as he started to really inti midate Perkins. Perkins was ab le to hold him on e more lap definitely ha ving the advantage in th e turns but lacking the power as McW horter turned the wick up as they hi t th e front straight a nd b lew on by. All of a sudden Perkins was a 750cc sandwich with McW horter to t he front of him and Da vis, ou t of Oregon to the rear and kn ocking on the door. Perk ins was able to ho ld Davis until th e last lap befor e Davis let it all hang ou t and got by to take th e seco nd . It was a fant astic ra ce with all three riders putt in g on qu ite a sho w. Eddie Lawson also on hand was signed to go in the ha lf mi le bu t decided to scr at ch and limit himself to the TT. It was a run away for the Upland ace as he set a pa ce no one could stay with in both the Mon ey and Open Am ateur/Expert TT . Ja ck Smith and David Reinhard t followed him home in the Money whil e Pat Dobbins and David Skirvin had the hon or s in th e Open . Dannv Perkins set t he fa st tim e of the night as he blew the 250 cc Experts awa y on the half mile , No one was ever seen close enough to cha llenge the hot shoe. The race was for seco nd as Terry Singleton got th e second off th e line but Dav is took it awa y o n th e third lap onlv to lose it back to Singl et on on fiv':. T wo laps later Davis was out with a sou r engi ne and Rob Selvy picked up th e third behind Singlet on as th e checkered ca me ou t. Rob Selvy came out top dog in th e Open Arn a t e ur /Exp ert in a De stru cti on De rbv th at sa w o ne restart . Dav id Skirv;"n ca me off th e line first with Selvy in seco nd and Pat Dobbins t hird. By two Selvy h ad dropped Skirvin to se cond wit h Dobbins sti ll in t hird. As they headed int o t he first turn eve ryt h ing broke loose. Dobbins was out, slidi ng up to wa rd th e wa ll a nd anot he r rider a lso fell ca using th e red flag to come ou t. Fortunatel y no one was hurt bu t Dobb in' bik e was d a maged eno ug h to sideline him for th e nigh t. T he single file restart had Selvy on top with Skir vin in second a nd Reinhardt t hird . T hey kept that order th e rest of th e ra ce . "Speedy" Pete Hames not kn own as a TT rid er showed the boys he ca n ge t it o n th ere too as he pulled a wire to wire ou t of th e hat a nd let th e rest of th e fiel d do t he scr a m b ling for the two a n d thr ee spo ts in th e 12 5c c Am at eur/Expert. St eve Karsten a nd Randy Morris were off behind Hames with Bobby Garabed ian and T odd Brown in th e four , five spo ts. It d id n 't take Brown long- to start moving as he had taken over third as th ey ca me around the seco nd time. He was never abl e to go any higher as Karsten had t he lock on second and no one was going to get by. Not m uch changed on the ha lf mi le where Hames is reall y in h is own ba ll pa rk and was on ly on e second behind the fast tim e set by Perkins in t he 250cc class . Todd Brown who is much more at home on the ova ls was right behind Hames with Garabed ian in for th ird .
