Gary Ogden (FMF) was th e first 250
Pro rid er to make an appearance
a rou nd the first turn. J im Gibson a nd
his Bassett -tuned Suzuki had the next
position . Warren Reid (Hon) . Mik e
Palhegyi ( Hus) and Mik e McGowen
(H us) were ahead of DG Yamaha .rid er
Mike Bell. Reid had bumped GIbs on
by the second lap with Bell a l.ready up
to third . Gibson dumped hIS mount
g iving Steve Rhya n (KTM) the
opport unity to m o ve to fou rth .

Reid reeled in Ogden ' o n the led ge
the n Bell b um ped him back one m o re
space. As Reid a nd Be ll blasted
around the exceptionally rough
terrain . a giant rock h it Bell in the
face and chest . gashing his chin pretty
badly. Gibson. who at this point . wa s
fifth . catapulted off the drop-off and ,
folded the rear end of his Suzuki under
th e frame . Reid led the parade to the
checker s. Bell was second . followed by
Ogden . R hya n and Glover.
After a quick trip to the hospital for
sti tc hes . Bell was back at the track and
o n the line for the second round of 250
racing. Tim Welker ( R M B) took the
holeshot; Ogden had the lead by the
time. the' riders approached the ledge ,
G lover . s-n. Gary J ones . Reid , and
R hya n ripped around after him . Reid
swooped Jones in the sweeper and Bell
b lew by O gden while going u p the long
h ill. It was q uite a good dice th~ two
had going until Ogden a nd not her
rider got tangled and O gden was o ut
for the day. Gl over an d Reid adva nced
o n Bell , b ut no t eno ugh to tak e his
lead a way . When th e checke rs went
o ut Rh yan , Pa lhegyi. Jones and W es
Sutton (C BM) fo llowed th.e leade: s.
Bell , G lover and Reid across th e finish
line.
Scott Montgomery got the holeshot
in the firs t 500 Pro race. l u ke Messe r
(Mai) , Mo nt e McCo y ( KTM), Da le
Anderson ( Ma i). Steve Rhyan (KTM )
and Fritz Schlegal (Ma i) rode next.
Montgomery rode hard and fast.
R h ya n rode harder and just a little
faster so a i th e halfway point of th e
race . the lead was h is. Dale Anderson
moved in to take third leaving fourth
to Florida tra nsplant McCoy. McCoy is
riding fo r. Maria DelaT?rre and
wearing MId · Valley Cycle s co lo rs.
After the race he allowed as how th e
tracks in So u th e rn California are
harder to get wired than the ones back
home . Directl y behind McCoy wer e
Bob Maxwell ( Bul) , Chip Howell
(Hus) a nd Fritz Schlega l.
Da nn y Steele was off the line first
and goi ng for the wide open spaces
before the rest of t he pack of 30 riders
m ade it arou nd the firs t turn . Dal e
Anderson took the lea d fo r severa l la ps
but had to su rrender it ' back to the
Yam ah a -m o urn ed Stee le . Rh ya n
look ed as if he wou ld ge t by bo t h of t he
leader s but a p an cak e -flat tire put him
o'u t fo r the rest of the race . McCoy
m oved in to third with Schleg al and
H owell next. Since his pla cings were
the m ost · consistent, A n derson was
cred it ed with t he overa ll win and
$160.
