MAY II Luke Messer, on a muscu lar Maico, sacked the CMC motocross at South Bay again. It is the second time for the 500 Pro class Ogden takes two at AMC Carlsbad MX By Chuck Burris CAR LSB AD . CA. MAY 15 W in ning every m ot o, FMF rider Ga ry Ogden captu red the 125 and 250 Pro classes, o nly having to work once for a victory. 22 The 125 Pros went first . and when they came out the track was a little rough and slippery. Scott Anderson, riding a Yamaha for Don Vesco . was first down the starting straight. but Ogden took the inside line and was first around the comer. Anderson gave chase. while Mike Tripes (Yam) was forced down by a fallen rider. O gden was ta king it easy at t he head of the pack Anderson now had to contend wit h T ripes . who had rem ounted q uickly and blitzed through th e pack. After a couple of la ps of rea r-fender to -front-knobby action , ' Anderson made a mistake and Tripes scooted by . T hey finis hed in t hat order. O gden got the holeshot in the second moto , instantly stretc hing out an impressive lead. Tripes occupied second. A nderson got started il) the backof the pack. moved through it in short order. but ran out of time to catch Tripes . As the gate fell for the 250 Pros , Ogden bid the pack farewell and rode away for the win . Dan Steele. on a Top Shelf Restaurants Yamaha . held a good lead over the rest of the pack for second. Tom Cross (Mai) and Jeff Vidic (Yam) were battling over the next couple. of positions. Towards the end of the moto, Wayne Boyer on a Yamaha . emerged and promptly went nuts. passing Vidic, Cross and Steele to finish second. Steele took third . The second moto of the 250s was the one Ogden had to work at. He took the holeshot , started to move away and fell at the ledge . The entire pack went by before Ogden got going again. In almost no time at all , he was zipping past people. Steele was out in front and cooking. with Cross again pressuring Vidic . Ogden seemed to be going twice as fast now and had moved into sixth. Steele was still o ut in front and time seemed to be running out on Ogden, who had moved into thi rd with Boyer righ t behind hi m . T he pair passed Vidic a nd went after Steele. Ogden reeled him in, got past. and ha d enough tim e left to open up a small lea d . Boyer , however. was unable to get by Steele and sett led for third . Vidic took the first Open Pro holeshot , but Steele and Top Shelf teammate Scott Montgomery blasted rider from Los Angeles a t South Bay. and he has won all his motos. The p rofessiona l classes raced together, · with the 125s getting a delayed start. O ther Maico riders. Fritz Sc hlegel and Mike Moore stayed close to Messer at times, but t hey never attempted to pass . Vince Kreizinger did a hard endover-end fall trying to gel a second at the finish . Terry Shekell won the first battle in what will be a lo ng war with Mike Tripes in the 125 . Pro class. On lookalike Yamahas, the two diced early in the first moto before Shekell accepted the lead on an extremely wet track from recent rains. In the second moto, the track surface turned dangerously tacky . On the third lap. Tripes passed Shekell and held for a lap . Shekell recovered the lead and narrowly held to the finish . The two hauled their bikes to the race in the same truck; if a team. they will dominate the class. Bill Cu rra n won the first moto in his div ision of the 125 J u nior class. and he was leading in the second rnoto when a long fall from hig h j ump broke his leg . In a hazardous blind spot to oncoming traffic he dragged himself off the track and was suffering severe pain when ca rried to the hospital. Max Maple makes competition interesting, a nd he has found p lenty in changing to th e 250 Int ermed iate class. This time G reg Meyers bea t him . In a last la p d rive in the firs t rno to , the top three finis hers swapped positions wit h Meyers m oving into first and Maple into second, In t he fina l rnoto , Maple m oved u p in a hard cha rge a nd chased Meyer several laps but cou ld not pass. . • Resu lts in Results Section. a SSM wins to Miller and Gibson By Danny Raymond ORANGE. CA . MAY 21 Wheelsmith's Gary Miller blitzed his Maico to top honors during SSM's Open Pro action. Miller's overall win came after coming from a poor first mota start and making his way into the lead before t he checkers fell. Suzuki -mounted Greg Blackwell followed in second after a moro -Iong battle with T .]. Warren (Mon). '" Warren came back to win the final mota . locking up second o ve ra ll. Miller held off a hard charge from Blackwell and Chip Howell (B us) to pick up second place and laki ng home the win . . During the ac tion -packed 250 Pro class. Bassett 's Jim Gibson pulled the first moto holeshm whi le SCOll Gillman (Yam) and Competit ion Cycles' Steve Rhyan (KTM) were glue!1 onto his rear fender. Moments later Gillman fell to the dirt. a llowing Gibson to wa lk into a lead that lasted throughout the rest of moto one. R hya n took advantage of Gillman's fall and went on to finish second . Crown Cycle's J eff Vidi c drove his . Yamaha pa st Tom Cross (Ma i) t o finish th ird . Again Gibson flashed his Yamaha through the first turn and into a short. lead over Steve Rh yan as these two got into a tight battle. Asthey worked up inro some lapped riders , Gibson started to make som e ground, finally leaving Rhyan in a distant second . Pro-T ec's Andy Kirk e r (Yam ) followed _ the Ie aders in third position .
