Stumbo maintained third and Kelly
m a n aged to pass Johnston about
halfway around and take command of
fourth place.
Super hot shoe. Brad Henson (175
Yam) was letting it all hang out
running sixth overa ll at this point.
Kelly pulled off with unknown
problems and in . doing so returned
Johnston to fourth place.
On the last lap Balentine was still
closing on Brooks. A short distance
from the finish Balentine caught
Brooks sleep ing and nearly passed
him .
At th e fin ish Brooks was able to
keep Balentine behind him for the
win. Shortly aft er the two leaders had
finished , Stumbo arrived on the scene
after riding a good consistent race
finishing third just ahead ofJohnston .
Henson shot in next , not only
finishing fifth overall and winning his
class, but beating all of the 250s as
well .
Gary Davies pi loted his 400 Yamaha
to the Open Amateur victory and sixth
overa ll ahead of Heath Hibbard .
First 250 was amateur Bill Tarling ,
riding a Husqvarna and edging out
current DRA 250 point leader Monte
Lee (Yam) . Young Darren Pritchett
won yet another Lightweight Amateur
race beating the hard charging Tony
Stuart ( 125 Yam).
. Gus Paull (400 Yam) had his work
cut out for him , having to pass Open
Senior Amateur Ed Denbow (400
Yam) and hold off the charge of M .S .
Dyott for the senior class victo ry.
In the 250 and Open Novice go
'rou nd , Marc Kibbe (250 Yam) led the
first la p but cou ldn 't hold off Tim
Sloan (400 Yam ), who then led for the
duration of the ra ce for the overall
win. Kibbe also couldn't keep Jeff
Hylton (250 Hus) in his dust either.
Hylton came from 15th on the firstlap
to second over a ll and the 250 win at
the finish.
The Lightweight Novice race was
won by Mike Willis and his 125 Suzuki
doing an ou tsta nd ing job. Rick Beck
(175 Hu s) and Mark Gervais (125
Yam) were rather spread out , but
nevertheless fini shed second and third .
Gil Catton rode with a flatt ened
rear ti re to a good overall position and
first J unior Lig htw eight Novice over
Brad Hunsinger (175 Yam).
C . Crabbe (500 Yam) worked his
way from back in the pack past Jerry
Glass (500 Yam ) but couldn't quite
ca tc h up to sen ior winner Bob Stokoe.
Nona Richardson (250 KTM) led
the Novic e Powder Puffers for the
entire race with a good lead over
Jolene Payne ( 175 KTM ) and Elva
Earll ( 175 Hon).

Gary Wilson (400 Yam) stayed out
in front of th e 250 / Open Beginner
.r a ce from st a rt to fin ish. Paul
Schlosser and J ohn Caynak , both
riding 250 Yamahas, finished second
and third . Don Duncan (3 70 Su z) won
the senior class.
Brent Needham . riding a rare , but
rapid Hercules. brought the 0·200
Beginners around for the first lap but
Robby Kennedy ( 125 Yam) slipped by
:wit h Craig Johnson (125 Yam )
following for second spot. Joanna
Estrade (125 Yam) beat Vanetta Ka h l
(125 Ya m ) for the powder puff victory .
Kelly Kline (80 Yam) was really
'shining as she ran in the top 10 for the
entire lengt h of the race to ta ke first
mini : Kelly did so well that Phil
Stumbo gave her h is victory
cha m p agne , saying she d id so well th a t
she deserved it.
The high point of the d ay was the o·
200 Beginner who had his trained
pigeon follow within 40 feet of him for
the wh ole ra ce . I wouldn 't have
believed it if I had not seen it. The
racer still rema ins ano nvmous.
