he'd been riding out there for 10 yea rs
and there was no way he was going to
.
ride int o that m ud .
Billy Uh l, a fi-Days rider, didn't
think it was all that bad. He was mad
because his Maico was onl y a 250 , and
seized just 25 yards from the end of th e
mud when it got too hot.
Mort Brecker, fourth overall , of
Pocat ello , Idaho, who is used to
- anything, said it was an " int eresting
race. "
Some riders, lucky enough to be
waved around or take a chance, won
by fluke .
Some win ners were those you'd
expect anyway. California's Pettigrew,
,a semi-sponsored Maico rider, has
been doin g very well in his first fu ll
year of dese rt raci ng a nd is known to
be te nacious . Fu ller, who lives in the
d esert , has been riding Cherry Creek
'for 12 years and co nsiders it th e
u lti m a te cha lle nge . Fu ller ca ugh t
Pettigrew just before th e finis h,- a te 'it
in fifth gear, stuck his a rm throug h t he
rear wheel , and sti ll finished second
after having to change a flat. Utahn
Joel Quinn, thi rd, is an excellent rider.
Gerber , eighth, after a slowdown last
year, h as been finish ing well in :77
with his new KTM (1st 250 in the Mint
400) . Utahn Mel Kim b a ll, 12th, is a
top hillclimber even though he only
gets to compete a couple of times a
year . Mark Jones , 16th, is a sharp
young racer.
Some losers and their families wer e
not. One woman accused the club
ladies at the finish of sending the bikes
into the mud so the club wouldn't ha ve
to buy any trophies. Jack Froelich,
stuck in the mud , knew better than
that.
Many of the bikes were. out by
evening. Club members worked until
four in the morning getting bikes out.
A few bikes were retrieved Monday
morn ing before rain drenched the
area all over again , making it all but
im possible to even walk in the fo ur
m iles from the dirt road . Cl ub
members left u nt il the next Sa tu rd ay,
Sunday and Monday when they could
ge t off work again after a week spent
setting course , and hop efully t he area
would be drying. T he J uab Co unty
Sheri ffs Posse, co-sponsors of th e
meeti ng, wou ld be patrolling in the
meantime.
For several years some loca l riders
have been complaining that Cherry
Creek is too difficult and not well
eno ugh marked by present 'd a y
standards for novices . Yet not many
are injured. Cl ub members maintain
that Cherry Creek is intended to be a
to ugh race, not designed for
beginners. Some moderation has crept
in . For instance , the sand loop was 30
miles long this year instead of 45 as in
the past.
.
.
I asked a spokesman for one of 't he
desert cl ubs which have been critical
of the SLMC if members of his club
would be willing to help next year to
ins u re that what they want can be
. done . No , he said, if it would be that
good a race t hey would want to ride it.
Wednesday following the race. a
group of riders ; fearful of the Alkali
Monster eating away their b ikes , h ired
a helicopter to retrieve them. Also
there are races next weeke nd .
There was a la rge probability that
Cherry Creek, a magn ificent race at its
best , wou ld never be held again. But
in 'a last -mi nu te development . a new
group wants to work with the ' SL MC
on Cherry Creek and th e Turkey Run .
The new group would supplement the
SLMC be autifully . Wat ch fo r
developments . desert lovers. .
