But in the intense , ph ysically. demanding and som etimes violent world of motocross, the term "Over30" horrifies most com petiti ve motocross racers, There are notable exceptions, and if one is willing to pay the price. the handica p of increasing age can be overcome. But, as a general rule, the approach of age 30 means a rapid decline in the abi lity to stay up with the 16 and 18 yea r olds , not only in speed, but in daring and physical fitness . So th e Texas Over-Sf) State Motocross ' Championship was held for the first time this yea r by th e Waco Motorcycle Club. Mike Macejewski had th e hole shot and immediately beg an stre tching it out over the pack, developing a 20 ·second lead on a two- minute circuit after 15 minutes of hard rid ing. j im Calvert looked like he might move up to challenge Mike ea rly on bu t cou ld not hold the pace and had to settle for second. Tom Gregory crashed while trying to pass Calvert, breaking his finger. Despite theswollen and painful injury Gregory continued onto finish both motos, bur -didn't win a muchcoveted trophy. Calvert had his revenge in the ~ second moto as Macejewski got caught in traffic off the start. Macejewski fought hard to work through the pack all moto long and finally caught Calvert with one' lap to go , but missed the pass at the finish by mere inches. The 125 Intermediate bash would ha ve been a runaway for Earl Cherry, except that with less than two laps to go he endoed off of a high flying jump, breaking his collarbone. Unaware that he was injuted, Earl got up and fin ished the first moto in sixth place. He didn't feel up to the second moto. In Earl's ab sence, Suzuki- mounted jim Barnes took the first .round win. jim 'a lso won the' second moto, but not without some intense' knobby. rubbing, That second rnoto was a close four . man race between Barnes, Ronnie Mullen (Hon) , Mac McKinley (Hus), and Tom Hollister (Yam), The 250 Novices , more than any other class ; seemed to bring out the really vintage machinery.
