Cole also m o ved by Oswell and took out after Haugh. Bla nd and Ren no were at it again. running fourth and fifth. Cole got by H augh . opening a wide margin. O swell was closing fast on Haugh. putt in g unbelievable pressure on him . Renno and Bla n d were careeni ng into ~ the turns with less than o ne b ike's length between them in their fight for ~ fo urth . When th e checkered flag dropped . Cole took first overall . Ha ug h scooped u p second and third - went 10 Oswell. Bla nd held Renno off for fourth. Pet er Pen land ( Mai -T rac k a nd Travel) took the overa ll win in t he 500 J u niors in a night long battle with Steve Huth ( KTM·Mid· Valley) . In the first moto, H u th took th e lead with Penland close behind . ' Penland tried every trick in the book to get .by : Going wide in the sweeper turns , and cutting in tight alongside. Taking the dropoff side by side and landing inches apart. You name it , he tried it but just couldn't get by . Meanwhile, a tight race for third was taking p lace between Bo b ' K e lla m s. Alan Root and Dan Pe terson . These three looked like the Superchief, right on each other's tail c lea r around the track. Rick Denney moved up through the pack. easing his way into fourth , putting Kellams and Peterson behind him . When the gate dropped for the second moro , Roo t led the pack up the hill with Denney behind him. Pen la nd and Huth were runn ing th ird and fourth. Once more , Pen la nd and H u th were on each other's tail, pressuring and pushing every inch of the track . Root ran into tro u ble and ha d to turn the lead over to Denney. Pen la nd , having a second in h is first moto , was now in second and really coo king, to keep H urh be hi nd h im . Their battle conti n ued righ t dow n to the wire where Pen la nd too k down the ove ra ll win . H urh held second and Denney sai led ho me with third . • Resul ts in Resu lts Section.
