The 23 Junior Mini entries saw only the south end of Jay lea's Yamaha as he headed back to Oklahoma with first place gold , while Gary Graham (Ya m) took advantage of Craig Riddle's (Suz) DNF in the final to go 2-1 over Steve Pate (Ya m 32) in Seni or Mini competition. David Greenhill's Husky pulled the Japanese horde in both rounds of the 125 Intermediates, turning back Honda-powered David Walker and David Flores (Yam). Almost 30 riders in 250 Intermediate trailed a terrific bout between Bu lta co-m ou n ted you ngsters Martin Talbot and Robbie Pannell, with the win going to Pannell at 2-1 over Talbot's 1-2 . The same "You win one, I' ll win one and take first " story went down in Open Internediate, as Andy H owa rd (Hus) preva iled over Mike Hawthorne (Suz ). Big-bor e money riders R icky Kid d , (Yam) and Darrell Hollingshead (Suz) took th e crea m off th e 250 and Open Expert purses ; while Wyman Prid d dy had an off day with his Bu ls, finally scoring third in the O pe n . After taking a second in the Texas Stadium Consolation moto, Tim Ridd le (Hus) went 3-3 for third in the 250 class . New Mosier Valley promoter David Walsh a n nounced the forthcoming Mid America MX Championship , an all-out, two -day affair scheduled for July 2 and 3 . • Results in Resu lts Section. Logston and Tanner first at EI Paso By E. W right EL PASO , TX , APR . 17 Clea r skies and mid-Bu" temperat ures greeted entrants for Sunday's race d a y activities wh ile Scott Logston (Yam) and Pet e Tanner (Pen) took all the Expert wins for the day . Logston led th e entire first 125 Expert mo to with Maby Mci ntyre (Yam ) and Mitch Moo rhead (Yam) stayi ng second and t h ir d withou t changing positions during the heat. Den nis Patton (Suz) on his FMF 125 crashed in the third lap whil e working his way up through the pack and retired for, the day. Logston got the holeshot in the second moto bu t crashed during th e first la p and ended up dead last. This was on ly added incent ive for Logston to prove that he can still pass the pack and he started his moves - passing all riders in two laps except Mcintyre wh o had a commanding lead. Logston slipped by Mcintyre for first in the fourth lap and never looked back. In the 250 Expert race Pete Tanner (Pen) and Scott Logston (Ya m), as usu a l, were winners again . They traded first pla ce heat wins with Tanner taking the second heat and overall win . T he Open Expert first hea t was a hotly contested race betwee n T anner a nd Mcintyre (Ya m ), with Tanner lea d ing the first seven la ps, pursue d by Mci ntyre less than a seco n d b eh ind the entire r a ce . Mcintyre p assed T anner in the infield on th e seventh lap and crashed at the top of th e second h ill (by Tanne r's p it crew). Mcintyre th en was rep assed as he fouled a pl ug, b ut eventually ca ught up and re-p assed Tanner in the eighth lap for the win . 'fan ner won the second heat for the overall win without an y fanfare and took home th e 250 and Open class first place money. Logston had to pull out with brake problems in the Open Expert ra ce. The Amateur ra ces were hard fou ght with th e Mini win goi ng to Robby Holguin (Ya m) a fter tak in g both h eats. In his th ird race since beginning the sport, Robby Davies (Suz), work ed his wa y up fro m th e middle of the pa ck to take a third and seco n d for second ove ra ll . Roger Hod son (Suz) led the entir e two hea ts to ta ke a n easy 125 win with Mik e Vergara p icking his wa y throngh the pa ck for a third and a seco nd fo r second overa ll afte r by -passi ng a specta cul ar b ut inju ry-fr ee tr ip le en do .infield crash by Stev e LaPoint e (Ka w). LaPointe put on on e of the best ra ces of th e day after his cras h by riding a box-stock Kawasaki and ca tc h ing and p assing most of th e pack for seco nd in the 'first rnot o . The 250 race saw two nea rly id enti cal heats with Dav e Eicher fini sh ing co nsistent seconds for second overa ll. A nasty fo urth lap cras h at th e 80 foot mark of St a r T rac k's popu lar "Suicid e Hill " put Larry Arm endariz (Pe n) ou t of th e runn ing witha severely cut lip , leaving h is t eammat es o n Pentons , Jim Johnson and Jim Amos to fin ish th ird a nd fourth. The Novice race was won ha ndi ly by Mike Haynes (Hon) in th e 125 cla ss as he rod e consistently to two hea t wins. with Ch uck Reel (Yam) comi ng in second . The 25 0/ 0 pen co mbined class was a walkaway with Ken Johnson (Cl) ou t-d ista nc ing his co m pe titio n in both heats. The 100 Novice class sa w Rich ard Bierna ck i (Ya m ) pic k u p a win in eac h heat for th e overall win , a half lap ahead of W ayne Suggs (Suz) who finished second each time for second overall. • '. TX , APR 24 ... ~ 1tit-,4 Louisiana rid er Ralph Babin , astrid e his red AW250 Ma ico rode with the smoothness of a river boat gambler to win the 25 0 Pro class overall and moments later also collected a first in th e R io Bravo Cash Dash. Ba bin and Glen Johnson fought it out in the 250 Expert class with Babin getting the win . In the special Cash Dash , Ba bin worked his way to the front of the pack whic h included such talent as Glen Johnson, Ba rt Batson, and Shaun Kelle y. Ba tson and J ohnson left the track mid way through the nine lap event with mechanical difficulties . _Kelley got within four seconds of the hot you ng rider from Calciseu Parish , Lo uisiana , when his 125 machine began to sputter. which ended his bid to catch the leader but held together long enough for a second place finish . In othe r Expert action, Mark Purdue a nd Gib Spradlin traded lea ds several tim es before Purdue claimed the overall win in t he O pen Expert competition. Kelley aft er a seco nd p lace finish and bike repa ir rode his wa y to a strong victory in the 125cc Expert class.
