Expert clash saw Boo Stichter's self sponsored Yamaha take the lead and never give it up. 100 Amateurs were action packed as all the riders were formally the mini class. First moto , Martin Donelson (Town & Country Suz) got the holeshot only to lose it to Sam Salter in the first corner with David Clabough in third . The three went out and away from the rest of the pack, and were wheel to wheel at the hairpin turns. On the long uphill Donelson. passed Salter and continued to charge in the lead . Clabough slipped around Salter and ' took second. Second rnoto saw Marr in Donelson ge t the holes hot and hang on . O ne week after the torren tial rains tha t washed away the Texas Sta d ium Superc ross and a local Suzuki shop , Mosier Valley MX Park retrieved some of the track from downstream with buldozers to host its regular first- Su nday race with over 250 racers . A couple of the creekbottorns and the foundation of the starting gate were still over· . sat ura ted and un used , but the tr ack . was mainly its old sandy self, fast an d rough . Speaking of fast, Danny Doss top ped the 125 Expe rts again , even dropping his Suzu ki an d repassing everybody in the final mo to for a 1-1 score and $100 payoff. Usua lly contending Ru ben Alonzo and Dave Boles were beset with problems, as Ruben dropped out and Boles hit one of the 250 class riders who was going to the line . After six weeks out with a cracked elbow , David Jones (Hon) served notice for the future as he led . both motos early. but a possible second overall went away with a thrown chain in the opener on the last lap, and a fall put him third in the final. Persistent Sea n O 'Brien kept on . both wheels to finish 2-2 in a Suzuki sweep of the class. Ron Kunz (6-4) and Clark Willey (3-7) too k third and fourth. Highlighting the hea ted Novice races was a duel in the lOOce division between Skipper Franks (Yam) and Cajun Todd Young. Franks had won the first moto over Young and a 20rider field . but Young got in front of the second race, only to seize his RM a half-lap fro m victory. T hese sam e riders retu rned to ba ttle in the 125 Novice. Division II , and although th eYtook second and third over all, James Roberts (Yarn) made it three wins in" th ree weeks with 2-2 marks to edge the 1-3 of Franks an d ' 4-1 of Young.
