David Taylor (Fra ). Tim Lunde (Ya m) a nd T onv Go mez (U FO) were next in th e parade . On th e th ird lap Taylor and th e " Roo " roosted Leu and moved in on Mille r. Jim Gi bson , a boa rd his Basset t Suzuki. swooped the ho leshot in the second moto with Lett rig-ht o n his knobby. Gomez and Lunde wer~ next in the swarm of screaming mach ines . T a ylor was dead last off th e line .. Gibson held the lead for five laps befor e Taylor rushed by. Lunde a nd Gomez were streaking a ro u nd the track try ing to outdo each other. when t he two riders went do wn hard. Gomez som e how got h imself t angled in Lunde's Yamaha . They were both out for the remainder of the da y. ne ither hurt badl y. Toyama battled for fourth . with Sh ekell taking it. Pa yback went to Ta ylor . Lett . T oyam a . Sh ekell a nd Goodrich . Warren Reid and his red engine racer took the hol eshot in the 250 Pro ra ce , mor o o ne . Jon Der Harnmer (Mo n) was breathing d own Reid 's neck as th ey ca me around th e first turn . Scot ! "Speedo" Gillman (Yam) quickly passed DerH ammer and began his attack on Reid . Mike Bell (DG Yam) led Derl-lamm er . who in turn was lea d in g Mart y Mill e r (Suz) . Ti m Lun de (Ya m) a nd Danny McDou ga l (Suz) . Gi llm an a nd BeU went bar-tobaras th ey ca me into the tight t u rn a t th e sco ri ng tower. Lund e and Miller spe nt most of th ei r t ime wa rdi ng off Va l Ta rniett i (Mai) and Ala n Smi th (MCA) . Bell passed Gi llma n for seco nd . ' De r Hammer and L u n d e finis hed in the four/five slots . Miller . Smi rh and Tarnietti were next. " Moneybags" Bell went for the lead in the second moto. Gillman stuck to him like glue . Reid was third . Miller Iou r t h and then Tamie tti and DerHammer. Bell led for severa l laps . and then Gillman grabhed the lead a way . Bell sta ved with Gillman and when it looked as if he would pass. Gillman shu t th e doo r. Bell finally blasted by Gillman as th ey came out o'f the gully in the back sect ion o f the track . Bell took the rnot o win a nd the over all . Gillman . Re id . Tarnieui and Smith we re next. Compet it ion Cy cles r ider SIeve R hya n (KT M) flashed off the line to begin the a ction in the Open Pro class . R hya n was able to hold off Mike Bell for a good pan of the ra ce. Following th em were Val T'arn ier t i , Mark Rod ma n (Mai ), Scou Gillman ( Ya m ) and Doug Sherman (Ma i). Once BcII got by Rhya n t hat was the last cha nge in Ihe order. R hva n took the holeshoi in th e second mot o , again followed hy Bel l. Sherm a n . Gillman and Ra nd y Blevins ( MC A ) led T .J . Warren ( Mo n) . Rodma n went down a t th e sta n . bUI by t he end of Ihe mow he ha d powered his wa y up to ninth . Crossing th e fin ish line first were Bell, Rhva n , Gillma n . She rman . A PR. 30 Mik e Bell ca me fro m be hi nd to win th e Saturday Saddleback Motocross (SSM) 250 Pr o division The su n rises in the east and sets in th e west , a nd Mike Bell won th e 250 Pro class agai n. One m ight ask. what else is new ? Bell ra ced a new bik e tu ned by DG Speciali ties a nd his co m peti tio n Warren Reid was a lso on a new bike . a Honda RC250 . T his was Reid 's first race on th e prot ot ype Hon da a nd a lso his first since a bo ut with th e flu . Gary Ogden was on a very q uick FMF Suzu ki a nd proved to be a facto r in the Sa turday racin g . In th e first moto Ogd en was over th e sta rt h ill first and q u ickl y stretched out a th ree -seco nd lead over Reid . who was seein g ho w h is new Honda felt a t race speeds. Ogd en held off Reid for six la ps. O n the seventh the Honda pilot passed. Meanwhile , Bell. who got off th e line in fifth pla ce , wasn' t about to let th e Ogden /Reid dogfight get out of his sig ht. Bell passed Scott Gillman (Yam) and Va l Tamietti (Mai) to pursue the leaders. By the ninth lap Bell ha d reeled in Ogd en for second place right behind Reid . As Bell moved up on Reid the d uo began to la p some of th e 125 Pros in th e combined race - it added to the excitement to see the Hond a a nd DG racers p ick their way t hrou gh tr affi c. Reid was picking off th e sma ller cla ss pros easi ly bu t co u ld n' t sha ke Bell fr om his. rear ti re . Bell' s me ch anic. brother Brett , was helping th e effort by signa ling the slower riders wit h his array of hand signa ls and a lso chal k board for th ose who d idn't read sign langu age . At th e 35 ·m inu te mark Reid 's lead was three seco nds , whic h stretched to a ro u nd 10 seconds when Bell exiied th e tree section , applied the gas a little too strongly a nd en ded up spi n ni ng "do nu ts" . Ogden , not far behin d , started to pass Bell on the out side but Bell kept on th e ga s and slid around in fro nt of the Ma ico rid er, b umped him , th en co ntinue d wit h his pursuit of Reid , As th e checkered flag d rop ped Reid ha d th e win wit h less tha n a fou r-seco nd lead over Bell in second , Ogden followed for thi rd . In th e fina l moto Reid put his red RC H onda in the lea d with J eff Vidic (Yam) second, slightly a he ad of T amietr i, Ogd en a nd Bell. Ogden was a det ermined rid er a nd by th e second lap had passed both T~ m ietti a nd Vid ic to take seco nd . By th e fif th lap Bell was on th e move and ha d slipped into th ird . T he trio of Reid . Ogd en a nd Bell was pu tt ing on a fa nt astic race. At th e ha lf-wa y m ark Ogd en passed Reid for th e lead with Bell sti ll in third . Onl y 1-1 m inu tes wer e left in th e ra ce when Bell slipped under Reid in th e sta rt -fin ish turn . The two rid ers were ha ndl eba r-to -h andl ebar in a d rag ra ce over th e two jumps a nd int o the left-ba nd er whe re Bell loo k th e high berm and Reid the lower one. When th e two berms ca me together it was Bell slig htly in fro nt , a nd when Reid tried to slip unde r Bell in th at turn he ac tua lly bum ped Bell eno ug h to leave tire marks on Bell 's DG je rsey's left elbow. Ogden had held the lead fo r 10 laps when Bell moved behind a nd dove u nd er Ogden in the t ree turn doing a little bumping of his own . Bell ex ited th e turn in th e lead th at he held for the rema in in g two laps to th e checkered . Bell finis hed first overa ll with sco res of 2 ·1 . whil e Reid tallied 13 for second ahead of Ogden in third . KT M-mou nt ed Steve Rhya n came alive in th e second rno to to take th e O pen Pro overa ll after losin g t he first moto to Wheelsrnirh 's Ma rk Rod m an . Robert Marino picked up on th ir d after Monr esa 's T .J. W a rr en re tired fro m the second moto with a flat rea r tir e.
