The Open Expert event had everyb od y pretty m uch together but the Money race was a wild on e with riders turning 360's where a 180 was ca lled for . break ing ground for a new ~X cours e a n? various other crazy thmgs . Through It all Pal mgr en .remained cool and pu lled away from the pack. Joh n Burnett got himself squ a red awa y afte r a shaky sta rt and lock ed into seco nd while Kip J ohnsto n and Mike Tripes tra ded back a nd forth for third with the nod goi ng to Johnston when Tripes went out wit h mecha nic al problems. . Mike Min nig . fast becomi ng on e of th e riders to watch . had his work cu t out for him in th e Money Half Mile. Vern Maxwell . who had already won the Open Expert cla sh . was hot . and looking to repeat himsel f. It looked as if it just might happen as Maxwell got out on top and was doing OK for three laps before Minnig got a wheel under him and went on by as they hit the front side. From there on out it was Minnig's race and Maxwell had his hands full trying to hold off a fast closing John Burnett. . Minnig also added the 250 Expert half mil e to his win list. He grabbed the lead ea rly with Rob Selvy Close behind and Terry Singleton in third. Selvy pushed his engi ne too hard and went ou t. which moved Singleton to second and Tom Ferguson into third . Denny Aguirre lost a heartbreaker to Pat Dobbins in the Open Novice/ Amateur half mile. Aguirre led almost the whole race only to see it all go down the tubes on the last turn of the last lap when Dobbins. who had been challenging all the way. was able to get around him. Pete H ames and Todd Brown . two of the fastest 125 Experts around . took on each other in the ha lf mi le and turned better times than the Open Expe rt ha lf m ile winner. They far ou tdistanced the rest of the fie ld wit h Hames getting the needed distance on Brown with what a ppeared to be an edge in horsepower. Bobby Garabedian ro unded out the field with third . . The seco nd time a ro u nd Eisert a nd Call aw ay were in a ph OIO fin ish across th e lin e with th e edge go ing 10 Callawa y. On lap three Eisert turned the tables but it was still a lm ost too close to call . On th e nex t"lap th e lead started to increase as Callaway dropped off slightly. Very close behind him . Hughes was very mu ch in the picture and Kerry Pick en was doing all he could to make Hu gh es' life miserab le . Eisert had things his way and brought it home with Callaway second and Picken just barely getting Hughes at the line. T erry W illiams. riding for Den's Tire and Cycle in Ontario . ca rne off the line in a n elbow to handlebar race for the first turn in th e 250 Novice TT and got enough of a lead 10 break Tom Hughes' win st rea k in th at division . Hughes still managed . to come up with second after catching Callaway on th e second lap a nd holding him back for the du ration . Results in Results Section. In the first moto Osborn (R&E Racing • KTM) was running fourth . una ble to make a dent in the lead Mark Hatclcy (Suz) and Tom Burgess (Yam) had . Burgess and Hareley were' rea lly flying-! Chuck Lunde was ru nning- th ird and keeping a lot of pressure on Burgess , Burg-ess a nd Lunde gave the crowd a few anxious moments. Osborn set up a stro ng lead as did Lunde and T it us . H at el ey mov ed up int o fourth a nd had Burgess right be hind . keeping t he pressu re on . T itus had moved up fast on Lunde. pushing him hard for second . Osborn had a wide -op en lead moving into th e whit e flag- la p and Lunde and Titus were neck a nd neck go ing throug-h th e sand wash . Kline the brightest star at AME night MX By Lee Taylor VALENC IA . CA . APR. 8 Bob Kline (FMF Hon) took Ind ian Dunes by storm with back to back wins in the 125 Pro class. And he had to fight for it. a ll night long. In the first rnoto . Kline started out back in the middle of the pack and had some heavy competition ahead of hi m . He sta rted mo ving up and got by Rodney Morrison and Jerry Shore on the back stretch. Bob Ramsey (Yam) was ahead of Kline a nd flying 10 hold him back. Off the drop-off and into the turns. they were side by side . Int o the white flag lap. Kline got by Ramsey and went to work on Ernie Hendricks (Suz) who had been leading the entire moto. Hendricks was hanging on for dear life. do ing It's reassuring t o look down and discover that your number plate is st ill t here, li ke this AME rider discovered .
