Kessler was in fourth for a few la ps, but H owe rton a nd Jim my W e ine rt dropped him to sixth . (Weinert's factory Kawasaki had sucked u p some sand in the first mot o, forci ng Weinert to DNF in that mo to . The first five were well ahead of the pa ck , led by Pome roy m oving up fr om a bad start. DiS tefa no moved right up on Mosier's rear tire, while Ho werton and Weinert were ha ving a tremendous battle. Weinert crashed, re-injuring his collarbone. Tony D finally mo ved past Mosier to lead the final race of the day all th e way. Smith got by Mosier with five laps to go , closed on DiStefano, but it looked liked he really didn't hav e his heart into it . Howerton , riding a modified pro duction CR250, dropped it in a comer a few laps from the fini sh. Pomeroy had already passed the " Rhinestone Cowboy," but the miscue let by Gary Semics (Kaw) and Tripes. Tripes got by Semics as well before the flag dropped. Sm ith's fou r-point total edged out _ Pom eroy (1-4) and DiStefano (5-1) for the opening ro und victory. Tripes was fourth in the fir st Na tional contest he's rid den In a while.
