Bland too k Deen on the final lap and look ed as though he wou ld be challenging Sumner for the front spot . but Sumner bega n hooking up and took th e win with a very co m fo rt a ble 12 bike length cushion. Rick Su llivan (Yam ) squeezed by, Deen a t the checkers fo r th ird , Tulare's big track always brings ou t th e " b ig bores" and the Open Experts provided one of the better races of the, n ight. Carroll Jackson . the 40-year- old fla sh fr om Visal ia , put hi s Triumph ou t front ea rly but was soon pressu red by 19-yea r -old R ick Villa unev a on hi s W est er n M ag Special Ya ma ha . Ville uneva closed o n lap three and starting the final la p was on J ackson's rear wheel. Villauneva fina lly got by b ut Jackson came ba ck . Out of the sweeper in a drag race to the finish . Jackson took the checker s inches ahead of Villauneva , Both received a good response from the audience fo r their exciting show _The battle for third was just as close as Bud Sturgill (Yam ) ed ged out Bob You ng (T ir). A protest was filed by 500 Expert Bill J o hnson , who wanted to make sure. that Jim Birkle 's Ya m ah a , (the 500 Expert winner), had the correct bore and was carrying legal fuel. The crack D -35 tech sq u ad di smantled the thumper . m easured bore a nd stroke , analyzed the fuel. and fo und tha t Birkl e's Yamaha was well within the limits . Johnson agreed and went horne, $60 poo rer . , In o ther races , Tim Pri tcha rd (Ya m ) was in command of the 125 Juniors, ta king th e win ahead of Bill W ilson (Suz) and Ken McCoy (Yam ). The Yamaha pil ot had to pl ay ca tc hup in th e 125 main as he ca me from sixth to second be hi nd Rodney Sulliva n (Yam) . Podergois worked his way by and too k th e win by fou r b ike len gths. Su lliva n was second and Scott Cude (Yam) third . T he 250 Expert main was red flagged on the first lap bec a use of a pileup entering the swee per . (a ll riders made it back except Bob Garrison who was taken off to ha ve his bac k X· (A bov el Scon Podergois won the 125 and 250 Expert mains at Hanford, as well as the sweepstakes. Mike H all ( Bul) took the 200 J unior lead on lap two after lea d er Russell Uchiya ma (Yam ) went wide in the first turn. Uchiyama . al ong with Marty Brown (Yam) . th en bob bled giving seco nd to Darrell Peek (C- A). Peek began challenging for the lead on la p three an d was applying the pressure even har de r on th e final lap . Too hard in fact , for he went down hard exiti ng the -sweeper handing the win to H all. Uchiyam a took second after Brown's bike broke on lap fou r . Michael Padilla finished thi rd . Mark Ritch ie (Yam) pulled all the stops to take the top honors in the 100 Expert bout. Ritchie led flag to flag but hometown bo y Chad Bettencourt (Ya m) tried in vain not to let his fans down , losin g the d rag race to the checke rs by wh at looked like an inch. Mike Vital (H od) was third . In other races, Roman Bettencourt (Yam) out last ed St eve Lopez (Yam) for the 100 Novi ce trophy_and Ronnie H all (B ul) bea t ou t Bob Winters (Yam) and Matt W right (Bul) in th e 200 Novice main . Ch ad Bettencourtwon the trophy dash , Mike Kin g the wheelie contest . and Janet Bettencourt won the Powder Puff three wheeled (free- fo r-a ll) short track . • Results in Results Section .
