CA , APR . 3 Two h u nd re d ninet een scram biers showed up ready to charge on Lodi's newly designed TT course. Following practice , a b e aut iful blu e g roove fashion ed around a more defined swee pe r and a less ha irpin-ish tree turn promised excellent ra cing. Heat racing separated the " rea dy to go fasit today" boys from the rest in som e strung out events , but main event time provided good competition. Expert action feat ured strong ri des from som e who sat out most of the rough scramb les season. Dimi nutive Marvin Lewis hooked it up in t he 100 event after an eight-month layoff fo r a win. He was closely challenged for a few laps but moved out th e la tter part of the main and won easily while Jeff Mason and Tracy Hays argued over second with Mason taking it. The 80 Expert main time saw Black Plate No . One Doug Chandler in his usua l sp ot up fr ont wi t h H ays in second. The real battle was over third where Bill Arbogast and Chris Carr (a victim of th e pen alty lin e ) were hasslin g . Arbogast rode a ste ady lin e . how ever. and took the last trophy position by hal f a bike length. Black Plat e No . Two St eve Br andt , recovered from his road race spill at Se ars Po int . shoved h is Con cord Yamaha to th e front of th e 250 Expert pack and moved out for his first win at . Lod i t his season . Burton 's Cycle rid er Robert Stockdale held off cha lle nges fro m Ken Netto and Sal Hoffman to reap seco nd place points. Always a tough com pet ito r , Stockdal e is expected to do well in the Expert ranks this season as he adapts to the Expert's pu sh and shove techniques . The Honda freight train was evid ent in a rarel y run 360 Expert class . Fremont's Lynn George outdistanced th e Kiser Brothers' Ho nda of Dennis Kritzer in a hotly co ntested main where ' ra cing was so tight that one mi st ake might mean going from firs t to last. Jo hn Tavis picked up secon d a hea d o f cu rrent Black Plate lead er J eff Haney. Tavis returned a few laps la ter to win the O pen Expert mai n over Alex Jo rge nse n . Du ane Spence . a nd Rick O tt o . Between Spence a nd O tt o there m ust be a bout 40 yea rs experience , but T avis moved out ea rl y a nd never relinqu ished the lea d . APR. 2 Rodney Sullivan (Ya m ) was the hot property at the Tulare Fairgrounds Saturday night. The 15year-old Riverdale hotshoe used the superb track conditions to his advantage in 125 and 250 Expert main victories . In the 125 main. Sullivan fired out of the first lap sweeper from fifth to third. following leaders Bob Merriott (Yam) and Sco tt Cude (Yam). Cude and Sullivan tossed second back and forth on la p two . with . Su lliva n taking com mand d own the straight. Merriott had b uilt a 20 ·bike· length lea d starting t he thir d lap . but by the fourth and fin al lap . Sullivan had cut the difference d own to seven lengths. Side by side throu gh the first tu rn ·and the righthander. Sullivan powered by on the back straight and took the win . Scott Podergois (Yam) finished third. taking the position from Cude on the third lap . Somewhat a newcomer to the 250 ranks. Sullivan proved he ha s what it ;. 35
