Duncan, Corporron lead action in Cancer Benefit MX By L. J . Duplichan HOUSTON , TX, APR. 3 Rio Bravo track operator Red Walling donated the entire day's gate and registration money to the American C a n ce r Society in the big ann u al benefit race with Walling and race d irector Bill Law , also donating th eir time as the race was handled with precisio n . Ba rry Duncan pulled the trigger on a two -year-old Can -Am 250 and shot to an early lead in the 250 Expert class. With each lap . Duncan widened the gap over second-place finisher Glenn Johnson and Florida Expert Joel Nicholson. In the first mota. it was all mud and money for Duncan as a light rain fell during .the early part of the da y. By early afternoon . the sky cleared and with the 250 money in h is leathers , he was ready for the special Rio Bravo Cash Dash featuring the leadin g Expert riders of the day in a win ner take a ll race. Duncan's faithfu l Can-Am once again brought him to the cashi er's window where he added an extra $ 100 for his day's efforts . . Suzuki-m ounted Rodney Corporron was the big man and the big win ner in th e Am ate ur divisio n . Rodney got off to a goo d start in the mud to st a y ahea d of Steve Read in t he 250 Amateur action . A first in both motos ga ve him the undisputed claim to the winner's hardware in that class. It was more di fficult in Open Amateu r com petition as mechanical problems plagued Corporron in the first mota. Rodney blasted to an early lead and held on just ahead of Hazen Sm ith and managed to cro ss the finish line with rear sprocket bolts dangling. Some quick repair action between motos by Corporron's fa ther and pit ch ief got him back on the line in time for an easy win on a dry track in the second m o ta . D alla s. T exas r ider Smith claimed second . T rac k operator W all in g a nnounced that begin n ing Su n day, April 10 , ra cing would get underway at 10 a .m. because of the la rge number of rid ers!
