She eased her Ya m a h a across the . fin ish lin e and left Steffen in second . Bultac o-rn ounted Ja ck Smith pick ed up third . The overall st andi ngs were the same as the last race with Dorothy Rowe re ceiving the o ne Expert 250 trophy. We had three visiting Mini Experts from Arizona and they stood up very well against our own Experts. The one Beginner, one No vice , and one Amateur were scored as one class , and the five Experts ran for a separate trophy. The Minis wer e' staged around th e track for the start according to their class. Jimmy Rosa, a Novice from Anaheim , had the advantage of starting way out front , but he held the oncoming Experts off for two laps until Amateur Jim Livingston , saw a chance to sneak by and he went on to take ,t he win. Ken Mcintire. an Expert, was just beginning to work his wa y through the pack when he got ca ug ht in traffic a nd was thrown for a loop , e n d in g up riding in th e ambulance and it looked as if he was through for the night. Billy Boat , an Ari zona Expert . was the second rider to cross the fini sh line . Both Livingston and Boat re ceived first place points beca use of the class difference . Moto two proved to be quite a heated race . John McArthur, another member of the Arizona team really put it to the locals as he grabbed Jimmy Rosa 's lead away. Gene Brown, a regul a r Elsinore Expert , wasn 't about to let some visitors take his spot in the winner's circle , so he pu sh ed and pe rsisted and - just in th e nick of time he moved into the lead . Livingston a lso got a taste of Elsinore dirt as he pu shed jus t a little too hard and sli d o u t o n the sweep er. Livingston got right ba ck in the act ion th ough and was first in his class agai n . Mcintire came to race , and ra ce is just what he did . H e was back out on the track and rode to a seco nd behind Brown . There's no stopping that kid! McArthur , and Donny Smallwood (both from acro ss the border) wer e next in lin e to Mcintire. By t his time the visitors were getting used to the tra ck and each race they wer e more and more competition for the regulars. Yamaha -mounted Rosa did a magnificent job of racing the last go 'ro und . H e reall y had the press u re coo king be hi nd hi m . Sm a llwood was a breath awav from Rosa and one bo b ble by 'him wo uld have given Sm all wood the opening he needed . But Rosa was ex tre mely ca re ful a nd led the way fo r most of the race. Livin gst on sn uck up o n Smallwood a nd wh en , he least e x pected it , he slid by and se t h is sigh ts on the leader. Rosa had more than he co ul d handle with Livingston behind him and as the white flag signalled one more lap, Livingston made his move. T he win went to Livingst on with Rosa second , Smallwood third to cross th e finish lin e . The Expert trophy was awarded to Gene Brown and Jim Livingston picked up th e other Mini trophy. • Results in Results Seetin , Auberlen, Sigman claim SRA Senior • wIns By Sue Senn ADELANTO, CA, FEB. 13 The trail of dust behind Senior division rider, Gary Auberlen (Suz) clearly marked the two minute lead he held over Gary Sigman (Suz) and Dave Crofoot (Suz) as he moved across the dry flat land of the South course at SRA 's Dual European / Scrambles . Crofoot a n d Sigman were battling through t h e rough section of rocky hills and wh oopdees when Auberl en threw a cha in. Sigman to ok full advantage of Auberlen's misfortune and left Crofoot behind to battle with Ken Thorall (Suz) for seco nd place, whil e he m oved in to claim first. Later in the day o n the North course , Auberlen made no mistakes and had no m isfortunes. He jumped , out front at the start and that's wh er e he stayed with Sigman hot on his trail. In th e meantim e , the real battle wa s going on between Novices Jim Horton (Yam) a nd Ken Thorall (Suz) over th e number three spot . Horton won th e battle , In the Women's division . Amateur rider Louise (W hite) Bates showed her recent marriage hasn 't hurt her riding Chuck "Feets" Minert , a name known to many of us that have been around motorcycles for any amount of time, had his BSA out and was ready to take o n the 500cc Experts. H e d id himself p roud . H e was off on top whe n th ey left th e lin e, using h is flat tra ck kno wledge to put some dis ta nce o n th e fiel d . Besides tha t , wh o wants to get in th e wa y of a Beezer wh en they start churnin ' up the d irt? Don Mciver was the br avest of the lot a nd it took him five laps befo re he co ul d ge t around Feet s. M in ert sta rted losing ground and finall y was co m pletely out of the pi cture when his motor got cantankerous on him. McI ver continued to hold his lead with Gordon Stafford trying to find a way to get around him . But there wasn't any and he ended up with a seco nd. Moto two again saw Minert out in front but this time Mciver was able to get around him by the end of three laps and again Feets' Beezer went sour. Pat Beasley had his earlier engine problems worked out and took second in the moro and overall. Stafford finished third. The 125cc Beginner class was about the closest race of the day. In the first moto, Jack Triantes was off on top with Doug Matz in second. It only took Matz one lap to get around Triantes, who stayed with Matz all the wa y to th e checkered . Mike Kloek got home third . In the second moto Matz got off on top and stayed there picking up th e overall win . Triantes came up with another second and ' Ross Adams and Mike Klock tied for third . • Results in Results Section , Miller collects Bounty; Norco tops HSMX at Corona By Elaine Jones C O RO N A , CA , FEB. 11 It was the final night of Bounty Hunting on Gary Denton . The word had gone out and there was a larger than usual turnout to see if he could allude th e pursurers one m ore time . The 125cc Pro class had grown with Don Snyder , Kenney Jones , Marty M ill er, Greg Sheets. Randy Hayes , St eve Bauer , Robin Richey and Kurt Sofka all looking to upset Denton. ' The first moto saw Gary take the holeshot with Marty Miller and Randy _ . _ . _ . _ . _ . _ . _ . _ . _ . - H a yes righ t b ehi nd. The win was ac com plished in typ ical Denton style : smooth, fas t and exciti ng - q ui te the o ppo site of the pol ite . quiet , almost sh y Denton yo u m eet in the pits . As they lined up for the final m ot o you could almost cut the tension with a kn ife. Gary had to win the fina l moto o r, Marty Miller had to fin ish behind him . The gate dropped and it was Miller off first , Denton second and Greg Sheets third. Miller had a good lead but Denton went about cutting it down. As they came over the jump by the start-finish line , on the white flag lap. Denton was riding double with Miller and starting to wo rry him . As they headed toward the gate that would take them into the hills . disaster struck. Denton's ch ain came off and he slid out. This was the sa ine thing that happened th e first night but then he had enough time to fix it and finish the race . All he could do Friday was watch the field go by and know the Bounty was abo ut to be collected. Marty went on to tak e an easy win with Greg Sheets second and Ku rt Sofka third. Sofka collec te d second overall a nd Sheets go t third. An inci den t took p la ce when Denton went do wn that ca n no t go unmention ed because it refl ects ba dl y o n the spo rt and hopefully it will never happen again . First of all abou t/seven spec ta to rs wer e in the infield wh ich is against the ru les . When Denton fell, they felt it necessary to cla p and jeer and make gestures totally lacking in class and sportsmanship. W e deplore such behavior. Fortunately Gary. pro that he is, rose above it all , pushed his bike back to the p its and went inside his camper. No one would have blamed Gary if he had taken a punch at these clods and there were quite a few willing to act as his stand-in. Miller, after collecting his $50 , got downright greedy and jumped on his 250 Suzuki and went two for two against the 250 Pros . collecting some more dough . Steve Bauer and Jim Latendresse were second and third. The strong. multi-talented Norco High School team again ruled supreme as th ey took on all comers and came out on top. Norco has a strong girls' team led by Jill McIlrath. So strong is the team that they had 'no one to even challenge them . McIlrath was easily the fastest; the rest of the girls could really do nothing more than t ry and keep her in sight. Jamie Hayes took second all three motos and Dana Sinsley was third. McIlrath then went and took on the IOOcc Intermediates: She finished third to Steve Dahle of Charter Oak and Wes H inman of Norco. Kevin Greenhaw of Norco, riding his Can' Am for the second time, .went against the 250cc Intermediates and fell in love with his machine and the' Corona course . He led from start to finish in the first moto, bu t in the seco nd , round he was in fourth after the sta rt. It didn't take him too long to work his way through to the head of the pack . Don Walls and Jeff Hellie of Norco were second and third . Charter O ak had two winners as Ryan Dow won the 100 Novi ce class and Stev e Dahle the 100 Intermediate. Alta Lorna had a clean sweep of the 17 5 class . wi th Jim H all , M ike Landmesser and Phil Moust d oi ng th e honors , Curt Saddl emere brought another one home fo r Alta Lorna when h e topped Marcus Bets of Charter Oak and teammate Jeff Johnson in the 250 Novice race . Almost everything else fell to Norco . .Results in Results Section. 27
