Roark held the lead for about three la p s , then Montague shot by and was never seen again . In the meantime , local berserko-crosser Danny McDouga l (SUI) was tryi ng to break free of Dysert and J~n~. By the fourth lap, he had esta blished a solid third and was closing in o n Roark . T h e ' m id wa y point of the 21.lap race saw Montague with a considera ble lead followed by Roark and McDougal in close combat. Th~ nex t pair was Jones and Pete Smi th (SUI). Thc checkered flag saw Montague cruise in to an uncontested win, then ca me ~oa rk and Mc Do ugal almost side by side, In the nex t ro un d , Tripes had the ho leshot all to himself. In a few short laps he bu ilt up quite a lea d over second -place Gary Jones . Montague was back in sixth place and he knew he had to get third or better in this moro to get the overall win . Roa rk and McDougal bo th had such rotten starts , they wer e o ut of contention. On lap fou~, Montague put himself right behind Nelson Whitehill's Husky ' and really a pplied the pressure demonstrating how badly he wanted Whitehill's third place. One lap later. he got by and took th e position for himself. Finishing in that place would h ave guaranteed an overa ll win but he didn't stop there . Montague set his sights on Jones and the battle for second was. on . All ,th is time, Tripes was stretching out hIS lead , m aking it almost im po ssib le for a nyone to catch h im . It was o n the 11th lap that Montague got by J o nes and tore out after Tripes. " Litt le's" lead was just too great , however, a nd he finished with almost a ll of it intact. Roark made up enough time to finis h third an d Whitehi ll carne in fourth. .
