Danny Pennington jumped out to a big lead in th e first moto with Scott Duplichan in hot pursuit as they came across the finish line first and second. . In the next 'moto , it was Kurt Stiles in -first place with Pennington a close second. When th e poirits were tallied , Pennington claimed the first place hardware with Kurt Sti les making a _ trip to th e trophy window for second place recognition . Rice beats Englund at LaFayette By Linda Donels on LaFAYETTE , CO , FEB . 13 The first 125 Expert moto at La FAyette, Colo . saw Jay Rice on the Town & Country Suzuki pull the holeshot with Arlo Englund Tony McGugan lTT500 Yaml and Rob McQuary ITT500 Yaml lead Tray Jorski (Penl in the first Open Expert moto at Ponca City Jan. 13. Jorski won.Unsetl Robert Lambert (Suz-4001 and Tim Cunningham crash and burn in the second 125 Expert moto at Ponca City. PONCA CITY , OK. , FEB . 13 Racing competiton was keen at the Ponca City MX Park ..with riders _ from e ig h t states participating in the qualifier for the Grand National Championship . Mark Russell (Suz) went out to an immediate lead in the first 125 Expert moto with Randy Kirschbaum (Yam ) and Gary Bowman' (H o n ) close behind. Russell and Kirschbaum rode close together, fighting it out for first place. Bowman wasn't able to keep up with them , slowly dropping back but still well ahead of the rest of the field . Russell took the checkered flag first , Kirschbaum second and Bowman a distant third . The second 125 Expert race was an instant replay of the first moto. Russell got the holeshot with Kirschbaum right behind. Bowman dropped back into the middle of the pack losing any chance of th ird place. Mark Russell's brother Randy (Suz) carne in third. Tray]orski (Pen) won the first and second 250 Expert motos, getting the holeshot on the crowd both times and keeping the lead with ease. Joe Burke (Suz) and Randy Kirschbaum (Kaw) were battling for second and third far behind ]orski. . Burke was able to stay ahead of Kirschbaum to take th e checkered ' for second; Kirschbaum taking third. ]orski won (Pen) the first O pen Expert moto with Chuck Cooper ( Pen ) right behind, Randal Burckett (Mai) in th ird. Cooper had a serious crash in the second 250 Expert moto , which kept h im ou t of competition in the second Open Expert moto . . Ove r one-fourth of th e field of riders wrecked in the firs t corner of th e start of the second Open " Expert ' moto . ]orski had gotten th e holeshot and gained a commanding lead as th e rest of the field was slowed by th e tieup caused by th e fir st corner wreck. Logston debuts new model Yamaha with win at Las Cruces ByW. Wright LAS CRUCES, NM , FEB. 13 The Las Cruces Motocross Club hosted their fourth points race of the '77 New Mex ico Motocross Series: Scott Logston, the points leader in the 125 Expert class , almost d idn't ge t to race when his YZ125 Yamaha blew up in practice. His sponsor had called him that morning just before he left for th e track to tell him the 1977 YZI25D had just arrived, but Logston had elected .to wait until the next week to race it. So since Logston now need ed th e machine , his Morn left to go get the new bik e - 70 miles away. The shop had a mechanic set th e bik e up and rea dy to ra ce for Mrs . Logst on wh en she arrived. She got th e bik e back to the track just as th e 125 Experts were lin ing up for th e first m ot o . W ithout any pract ic e Logst on pumped th e little Yamaha from fourth to first in half a lap then cr ash ed twice he was not familiar with the new bike . The second moto was a ll Logston's. H e came from sixth to first an d won over a m inute ahead of second place rider Sid Denham (Suz). R andy Irw in , (H on) crashe d on th e first lap a nd ca me fro m last to third by th e end of th e ra ce . In th e fir st moto of th e 250 Ex pe rt , Gary W ilson , who h as b e en unbeatable on his new Penton , took th e lea d a nd im mediately sta rted stretching it ou t. Scott Logston and R andy Sta hma nn (Mai) were caught napping on th e lin e and had to work their way up from mid-p ack to second a nd .thi rd respec tfull y. St ahm ann fina lly passed Logston and th ey both al mos t caugh t Wil son , wh o was havin g bik e troubles. T he second 250 mot o had Logston in th e lea d with St ahmann seco nd . Those two had a d ice th at wou ld raise you r hair until Logston injured h is ankl e and cra shed, and fina lly cruised in for secon d jus t a head of Mark Woleslagle (Ya m ) a nd Scott Edeal (Hus), third and fourth . • . Resul ts in Results Section. Kelly takes Expert w in at Rio Bravo By L. J . Duplichan RIO BRAVO , TX , FEB . 20 Shaun Kelly spotted Ralph Babin a brief lead in each of the two 25minute motos in the combined Expert class at Rio Bravo MX Park. Babin, astride a 250 ' Elsinore , couldn't ho ld the lead as Kell y taunted h im consta ntly and finally got around to win . " .. The local Experts were u naccustomed to the.longer motos and the total of 25 laps ca used some wear and tear on riders mo re accustomed to running only 15 laps. Kell y a nd Babin . showed no ill effects , however, as they sta yed well ahead of th e pa ck and .never fa ltered. Mike Gill threaded his way through the traffic and tired riders for a third pla ce fini sh wh ile Blake Haynes' sta m ina was good for fourth overall on his big Open class Yamaha . In th e Amateur action , it looked like Reid King m ight do it a ll. H e began the da y by riding two perfect mot os in th e 125 Am at eur Division for a first over a ll. King th en tu rned his tal ents to a 250 m a ch ine a nd prom p tly rode two perfect m ot os in th e 25 0 Am at eur class to win th at division. King's next cha lle nge was the Open Ama teur class, but th e boys on th e Big Bore ma chines wer e u n im pressed . holding King to a n eighth place fin ish pushing him in second. Ric e's riding partner , Mike Loeffl er, was third .. On the first lap , Rice was going full throttle, knowing Englund was back th ere , a nd Ric e laid it overIn a tight left -ha nd turn. Englund took over the lead , with Loeffl er in second and Ri ce off th e p ace . Two laps to go and everyth ing .was status quo , except that Ric e was moving through th e pack. As the c hec kered ca me o u t ' it wa s Englund , Ric e , and Loeffl er. The second round again saw Rice blow the pack awa y off th e st arting lin e, aga in with Englu nd in hot. pursui t. Englund p assed and built a good lead on th e rest of the pack. T he halfway flags came o ut , a nd sud denly Englund pulled off th e track with pe tcock trouble. Eng lund fixed the problem , onl y to find th at half th e rid ers had' pa ssed h im . W ith impressive riding and exp erience he p as sed ride rs , b y the c hec ke re d managed to put himself in th ird. With a firs t and third, Englund was second - overall . Rice won first overall for the day . Englund won with a clean sweep in th e 250 Expert class, and Gary Glasenapp took home th e silver in Open Expert. . • Results in Results Section. Oklahomans beat Texans at Rocky Top Two Hour By Frank Harrison IOWA PARK. TX , FEB . 13 What do you do when you build a 'playground in your backyard and the kids next door come over and tear it u p ? You just grin and hand 'em their t rop hies as Rocky Top Two Hou r promot er Harry Crook did . Lawton Oki es came down across the Red River to th e second Rocky T op Two Hour Cross Country of th e season and ran off with every class. Crook's "rattlesn ake acres estate" co vers the full spectru m for. all types of riding in its five- mil e zig-zag course, abundant with m esqu ite a n d 'ca ctu s thorns, ro cky gulches, a nd, on this oaccasion , several rea l red clay mu d hol es. After a pract ice la p, the en try list was cu t down co nside ra b ly - on ly 56 r iders got the start ing g u n , with another 20 decid ing to specta te. Even the winners' helm ets were witness to tim e spent head down in th e mu'd . ~ 33
