They held onto these positions right down to the checkered flag which brought Haugh hom e a first overall. Hansen took second, Strauss th ird . ' It really was Dave Haugh's dayl N ot only did he take th e o!.erall win in the 250 Pro race, he came back in the 500 d ivision for a seco nd victory. In the first moto An dy J an n ing s di d everything he could to win , and al most made it , leading for two-th irds of t he mo to . Jannings kn ew he had Haugh and Skeet Wyman (Mai) coming up behind him and he did everything he could to hol d them off. But with three laps remaining . Haugh got by to take th e lead . T he battl e was on between Wyman andJannings for second. Sideby-side down th e straightaway they flew and into th e tum at th e end. Wyman got by Jannings and managed to hold him off for about one qU,arter of a lap . On the wh ite flag lap . J annings passed Wyman and held h im off with about o n e bike's lead . Heading into th e ch ec ke red fl ag , J ann ings held onto se co n d and Wyman took third . The second tim e around , Haugh assumed th e lead right away. Tom Webb (Mai) DNF'd in his first moto , _ but this time he really put the heat on Haugh. Wyman ke pt Webb company with Jannings in fo u rt h . Haugh stretched out a n ice, smooth lead as Bill Hagen (Suz) mov ed into fourt h . Wyman , who held onto second for m uch of the moro , lost it to W ebb. In some kind of tro uble, Ja n nings pu lled off th e track . As t he checkered flag went ou t , Haugh had a no ther first overa ll with seco nd goi ng to W ym a n and third to Hagen. In the 250 Intermediat e ra ce, Mike Gosse la ar (Suz) came back from a secon d in the firs t moto to take first overall. T he first t im e a round he was ru n ni ng second, tryi ng to ge t b y Tim Schm idt (Suz) . Gosse la ar was closing on Schmidt a nd wou ld almost get by in th e turns. Chuck Behrle (Mai) and Greg Berman (Kaw) were riding third and fourt h , pushi ng each ot her relentlessly: T hese two too k the track by sto rm, side-by-side over the ju m p and through the tu rns. Insep a ra ble! Gosse1aar was right on top of Schmidt and went down , trying a bit too hard . H e recovered in t ime however , maintainin g seco nd .
