TX , FEB. 13 By Craig Randall 'Derek Wedding of Marshall, Tex. pulled off .the overall -win in the IOOcc class here at Get Sideways MX. But even though 34 Wedding won . he had to ride hard to earn that victory, with the competition very tight between the first seven riders in the class each moto , The determined charges of Don Bums and Todd Young made this the ' m ost exciting race of the day. Wedding then jumped off his 100 and climbed onto his 125 to easily win the 125 Novice class. The 250 Novice class was the largest in terms of entries, which made the first turn a bit crowded. There was one big crash. but no one was seriously hurt. The big surprise in the class was ' the good showing 'of Lou Chandler of the WOR Racing Team of Shreveport . Louisiana . Charidler won the overall with his 175cc Yamaha , beating all the 250cc machines . • FORT HOOD, TX , FEB. 6 Although billed as a practice on the Fort Hood Ys-mile oval , this day turned into a race featuringsome outstanding competition between riders out to have a good time and several AMAPro Novices who showed up to sort out this yea r's 250cc equipment. Today really involved a great deal of practice, some organized Hl-Iap heat races. After time trials for everyone , fastest 15 ' r id ers regardless of engine d isplacement .or tire configuration - qualified ~o r a 20 -lap main ev ent. a n d three com plim enta ry trophies. As the heats progressed . the tra ck rapidl y de veloped a blue g roo ve right down on the pole , Anywhere else on th e tra ck was so slippery that_ w~~ be ' unto you if yo u m oved even slig h tly off t he pol e. Time trials began to shape up after lunch and Bob Goodin of Bedford . Texas , a new Pro Novice , set the fastest time of the day on hi s Kenny Roberts-framed 250 Penton , at 13.6 seconds. The third fa stest time of the d ay, (and the only other ride r to break into' th e 13-second bracket) . bel onged to J oe Bu erin eke on a stock-looking TT 500 Yamaha , The 15 riders lin ed up side- by-side on one row for the main event start. T h e 60-foot wi d e tra ck , eas ily ac commodated all 15 riders into the fir st tum with no restart . John Po e (CA) jum pe d to an immediate lead whi ch he held for 1'5 laps. Buenneke (Yam) moved right into seco nd and John Williamson ( 125 YZ Yam) was third. Goodin (KR 250 Pen) lingered in about fifth place . but he put on a drive that persisted until the 16th lap, when he was finally able to pass Poe on the outside in the third turn for the lead. Goodin stretched his lead until the checkered flag for , the well deserved win. Everyone was co nce rned wh en Bill y Hatfield (H us) took a hard fall in th e second 125 Exp ert mota , Mark Ru ssell (Su z) had pulled t he hol esh ot with Hatfield fl yin g behind. Hatfield passed Russell , Russell p a ssed Hatfield , th en Hatfiel d found a spot to pass but got out o n loose d irt and flipped . The cras h crushe d a bone in Hatfield's upper right thigh . W right ALBUQUERQUE, NM, FEB , 6 The three New Mexico's riders who had an AMA Pro license in ' 76 ' shared class wins at Albuquerque's Sidewinder Motocross Park. This was the third . points race fo r determ ining sta te champions, and since th e series . wa s extende d , to most of th e tracks in th e st ate, th e racing has be en very good with no one town having an advantage .
