Mark Gambetta (5) and Parry Klassen dueled in 250 Pro at Sprockets Pk. Klassen wins hard flghtatSprocketts By Lee Taylor BAKERSFIELD, CAL. , FEB . 6 Parry Klassen, riding a KTM for Fresno Cycle Center, took first over-all in 250 Pro with a hard fig ht on his hands. Out to ge t his sha re of a $1,000 purse. he. finished his first moto in first . Back on the lin e for th e second , Billy Pa yne set up a lea d over Mark Gambetta (KT M) . Gambetta im medi a tely went to work , closing in on Payne. J im Hale, (Ma i) was right on Gambetta's ta il and wouldn't budge. First, second , and th ird place riders were less than a half bike's d istance from ea ch other, Gambetta and Hale were side by sid e com ing up out of th e gully, These two were unrea l! Gambetta would get by Hale and Hale wou ld pick it back up again. Meanwhile . Kla ssen was moving up in a fa ntas tic come-back to third. On th e white flag la p Ga mbetta picks up first and Don nie H a nsen (Ma ico·C. M.S.) has moved into third. Coming d own th e straigh t-away in for the checkered na g Kla sse n and Ha nsen a re side by side for a photo finish . First over -a ll wen t to Klassen , second to Ga m betta and third to H a nsen . Bobby Jones (H on- C. H .). a fter a su pe r winning ride in th e firs t 125 Pro moto, came back in the second moto starting out in fifth, Doug Nic ol (FMF) gra bbe d the hol e sho t a nd set out to d o some fantastic riding. Jo nes, setting himsel f up for passes. starts mov ing up alongsid e Da ve Eropkin (PK), These two had a battle for th ird place th at was unreal! .Finally. on th e st ra ight. away. Jones gets by and goes a fter Cliff Lett, Bill Joyce, (CH) mo ves on Nicol. Jones gets by Joyce for second and goes to work on Nicol. Jones and Nicol take the jump side by side and Jones gets by 57-year-old E.C. McVey stuffs it inside a youngster in the mud at Cycle Land Speedway, Chico, Calif., Feb. 6. Backwards action at Action Raceways In th e 125 Junior ra ce it was a battle ro yal between Kirk Sturgeon . (H on) a nd his Air cone tea m ma te , Greg T aylor (Hon). In th e firs t moto , T a ylor took the hol e sh ot and had a fig ht on his ha nds holdin g Sturgeon off , down to th e las t half of th e last la p when Taylor we n t side- wa ys a nd Sturgeon got by , T he second moto, Taylor ran into trouble on the first turn and started in sixt h . Sturgeon was runnin g second and Bill Sekeres on a new Suzuki . also rid ing for Aircone took the holeshot , Sturgeon , hot on Sekeres tail , r ec o vered firs t. Meanwhile Taylor was mov ing up th rough th e pack and got by Sek er es, bu t ca n't get close en ought to Taylor in tim e for th e ch eck ered nag . • Resu lts in Results Section . By L. J AN . 23 Mike McCormick left his 100 Yamaha at home and loaded a new 250 Suzuki up a long with his 125 Yamaha , ready to go 30 racin g . In the 125 Interm ed iat e class , Mike ro de like he a lways does in th is class. domin ati ng it an d lat er rid in g to a win in 250 Intermediate. Keeping the day interesting was th e local shoot-out between Robby Watilo (Yam) and Curly Lambert (Yam) two of the fastest mini throttles in the Northwest. Curly got the scratch. but Robby moved closer each turn , Curly ga ins a little in th e st re tch but Robby goes tighter into th e turns to win . Both of these characters pulled off th e track after th e Min i rnotos a nd rode them righ t over to sta rt the 100 clas s. T ough riders, th ese kids. • Results in Results Section. CORNI NG , CAL. , J AN . 31 There was quite a change at Action Raceways for this time the track was run backwards, making more of a challenge for local people and break for those new to the track . The 100 class h ad some new faces and local favorites wer e not in th e winner's cir cle , Danny Dugan from Eureka (Ya m) won both motos, and Jerry Smith was second overall for the day , In th e 125 Intermediate class , a local Redding rider L ance Lollar (Suz) put everyone on the ir toes. Dal e Castleman (Yam) was first in th e first 25 minute moto, th en Lance took first in th e second moto , for a first overa ll. There was a close race for seco nd in th a t mot o , Danny Vill opoto (Ya m) losing to Dale Castlem a n , Ta d G u m bm a n n ( KT M) Open Expert was a win ner again for th e day, wit h Mark Ma tt eisen d own 'from Orego n (KT M) taking the 250 Expert . .Matt Colem a n (Yam) from Fortuna was th e 125 Exp ert winner.
