Powell SUNNYMEAD, CA , FEB . 6 It I doesn't take long for newcomers to get turned on to the hrill of going up a virgin hill once they get t he hang of it. Bob . Reed had made the trip from Needles to DeAnza for three hil lclimbs , and if . he wasn't a confirmed climber before, he is now . Reed was a ra nk amateur, but he found his spot in the DeAnza 250 Beginner class , setting his high mark 24 feet higher than his nearest competitor and headi ng · back to Needles with the first place brass. Reed was p leased - with the performance of his Yamaha , and more than a little thrilled with the showing he ~ had made. Husky-mounted Ray As~ro, second in the Beginner class , is determined to be the next rider to " win his way" out of the Beginner class. O ther Beginners managed to do well , altho ugh they were ha ndicapped in ' tha t there were no ot her classes sta blished fo r Begi nne rs . Pe rry Edwards, who has been cli mbing for only a few mont hs, took the win in the 125 Stock class , and his competition included top riders in that div ision. Joe Graper, a former hillclimber who has been out of action for nearly two years, made a fine come bac k by walking away with first place in the very competitive 360 Stock class. And Joe's young son , Mike , gave hillclimbing a ood try by setting a second hig h mark in the Mini class, a short distance be hind winner..Gary T h ort on . The other, classes were dominated by ' the "old timers" of hillclimbi ng, uch as Kerry Pe terson , who ke pt u p is do mination in both the 400 Stock and the 400 Modified classes o n his Maico. He a lso managed to beat out the com petition for win s in both the 250 Stock a nd 250 Modified cl asses, this tim e on a H a rl ey. DeAnza ha d opened a new hill gain today, and with the possibility of inning $100 , the action centered on he big bikes, the only ones that ee m ed to h ave a chance at getting ver the top . Today's win went to N ea l Mackel , he "winningest" rider in the O p en lass. Mackel was one of the men who ad put u p t he money that would go to he firs t m an over th e to p . If he could e that m a n , he'd be out only his entry or the day . If someone else got over, is two rides u p the hill would cos t him ore tha n $100 . Bu t , Doug Hall, owner of DcA nza , had done a goo d job of pickin g his hill. Not even Mackel was to get over the top this day . Mackel did manage to set the high mark, 312 feet, but even that was a fu ll 30 fee t short of the crest. Second p lace wen t to Bill Correll on a 650 Triumph with .a footage of 266 fee t . with third goi ng to another .650 Triumph ridden by Ron Saffle, who went 261 feet.
