Brown got his tire fixed and was on th e line for th e ne xt moto. When the green flag fell . it was L aTendresse and McDougal in front . with Brown not far behind. McDougal wa~ determined not totake another third and his pace was considerably faster this round . On th e third lap he shook himself free of LaTendresse and took the lead for himself. It wasn't: long . how ever . before Brown was right there with him . An exceptionally clo se battle follow ed . The two riders we r e kno cking handlebars in the comers and sid e by side in the straights. They both knew whoever won this moto would win the ra ce . On the 12th lap it was Brown in th e lead. but it was so close that nothing was for sure. It wen t right to th e checkered flag. In the end . it was Brown ahead. with McDouga l right ' on his ta il. CA.JAN . 16 Charles W elk, who lately ha s been having problems with desert racing, came back to give it another D-3S try, winning the 20 Im peria l Valley M .C. hare scra m bles in the desert west of Plaster City . W elk (Yam) mov ed int o th e lead on th e first of four loop s. J im Ribley pr essu red Welk until he dropped out on th e last loop. Dan Dibb , Paul Edd y and Ric Secor, all on 250s . occupied th e thi rd through fifth slots in t he ea rly goi ng. As the race progressed . Dibb hadproblems a nd Pau l Nanchart passed th e other two . At th e finish. Welk had a bou t a minute's lead over Nanchant. Eddy and Secor stayed in third and fourth . Behind th em and Pat Flannagan was the first 125 . ridden by Ron La Ffranchi. The Old Timers class win went to a rid er by the name (?) of Mono Fox. • Results in Results Sect ion. CRC Barbender Enduro: Surprise check on fireroad By lynn Kelsay RED MO UNTAIN , CA ,JAN. 23 CRC teamed with the Bar Benders M.C. to put on the Barbender Enduro. CRC laid out the first loop, with th e club doing the . sa me on th e second loo p and manning all th e chec ks. Riders on th e first two numbers got onto the Desert M.C . Ha re and Hound cou rse bri efl y. but CRC spo tted the problem a nd tore down th e ribbon . which crossed th e cou rse several tim es. Heading out onto th e first loop. th e course followed a sm ooth . n arrow . gently-twisting trai l for six mil es. T he trail led to Trona Rd .. crossed it and rid ers found th e tiebreak er ch eck a t th e bottom of a 15-foot slope on th e other sid e of th e ro ad . T he co urse th en go t onto a fireroad for awhile before start ing a sm oo th wash com plete with wat er. J AN . 30 Mike Joh n sto n (400 KT M) passed reigning Ponderosa master Monte Lee (25 0 Yam) on the first loop and led the following three to win the Greyhounds M_C. hare scrambles on the whoop-de-dooladen eight-mile course. Johnston was the leader off the start, but let Lee and Steven Heinze (400 Yam) by and tried to' follow their lines . In a place like t he Ponderosa th e only time many riders are on course is at th e three checks. Heading towards th e home check, Johnston went by both of th em and opened up a 30-ya rd lead . On su cceeding loops, Johnsto n opened up h is lead to about 30 seconds , whi le Lee pull ed stead ily awa y from Heinze. who was getting tired . Behind the top th ree was a battle for first small-bo re . Lee Fab ry ( 125 Yam) led th e first loo p . but fell be hi nd Bill Walters (Yes. Bill W alters as in Bill Walters Leathers). who was riding a 175 Hu sky. Talk ing a f t e r th e fin is h, both Johnston a nd Lee agreed th at th e extr a hors epower had been a hea lthy advantage for Mike. and that it would have been a n extremel y close race on eq ua l ma chin ery. There were no ability cla ssification s. and anything over 175ccs fell int o th e Open class . By t he Greyhounds' sco r ing syste m . Johnston was awa rded first overall and Lee was scored as first in th e Open cla ss. Walters fini shed fourth and won th e 175 cla ss. Ironman Morgan M alocco. There wer e only about 30 entries in the ra ce. and most of th e riders were friends. The Greyhounds provided ' only th e basics; th e course. the scoring ,a nd th e trophies. JAN . 16 Morgan Malocco (400 Yam) took advantage of the hick of d ust and good traction at the CRC Team Race and led it from start to finish . The solo entry. of " lronman" cla ss. took three of th e top four ov erall positions, with Bill Saltzman (400 KTM ) rec eiving th e ch eck ered about a minute behind Malocco. At fou rt h overa ll.
