The big surprise of th e afternoon took p lac e when Mark Homchick rod e a 1961 Ma tch less to an over all victory in Fourstroke GP . Dain Gingerelli (Yam 250) led th e opening lap of 250 Production/125 GP but John Ch erm ak (Yam 250) power ed past to th e win . follow ed by William Brinkerhoff on th e first 125 . Gingerelli pla ced third overall . ~econ d 250 . Bill Mullins pa ssed two rid ers in on e left -right seri es to mov e into second 125 . fourth overall at on e point but Joe Tamas got by to finish second 125. . To no on e's surprise. David Emde jumped into th e 250 GP Iead . followed at a distance by Eddie Lawson , t hc winn er of th e Beginner's Ra ce (it was Lawson's first GP rid e). . Moorewood tri ed hard to catch the 125 Pro class , b ut got shut ou t by Dave Eropkin (Hon) , who took advantage of the DG rid er'. unfamiliarity with his new ride , a 1977 Yamaha YZ125 . Moorewood d id it . however . in th e 100 Pros over Mit chMusgrave (Hon) and · Dan Ho ckett (Hon) . With so many riders and classes on ta p. eac h mot o was ru n fas t a nd di rt y. givi ng every class on ly two motos eac h . so it was "gassit " t irne a ll the way . Moor ewood did just th a t in th e firs t 250 round while Miller had to tak e t he backseat for seco nd . Thi rd wen t to Gr eg Ba rr ett (Suz ) who go t DN F'd out of existence in round two . The second start wa s a ho leshot d uel between La nce and Marty t hroughout t he brief moto , Ma rtv soon got t he upper hand , but wa,{ nevertheless closely tailed by Moo rewood as Miller went in to clin ch th e checkered flag. Third overall went to Mark Ma rinez ( Mai) who rode co nsistently 5·3 be hi nd Moorewood . Tom Mayfield (Mai) had led th e first Open Pro moto until ignition ills pu t hi m out . giving th e win to Sco tt Cavness (Suz) with Ken Taylor second. Ma yfield reb ounded t he second time aro und with Chuck Ma urath (MCE) seco nd . but Taylor's th ird pla ce fin ish gav e him the ove ra ll. Cavn ess followed in for seco nd wh ile Ma yfield 's win bounced hi m up to th ird . 125 Pros were run off on a seco nd sta n after the Open Pros took off. Mark Brooks (Suz) was in fourt h behin d Chuck Maurath ( MCE) and was making ill out side pass in a turn until he r an out of be rm , lock ed hand lebars wit h Maurath, and wen t down . Mom ents lat er . Moorewood crested over a jump . a nd before he cou ld cha nge his line , th e 125 Pro leader cras hed into the fall en rid er s. Dave Ero pkin (Ho n) flew' on by. a nd "wh e n Moorewood got u nderwa y, Ero pkin was long go ne for the win . Eropki n got t he second 125 stan ahead of Moorewood a nd had it until Moorewoo d got on b y in a sweeper to ta ke the lead for himself. Un fort una te ly. Moorewood fell again and Ero pkin was on his wa y to a noth er win to sew it a ll up fo r th e 125 Pros. J on C la rk Yam ) roll ed in to ta ke second .
