es er t the deser t(Above left) It 's easy to see why the lead is so import ant in to third place at the Desert dust. (A bove right) Dwayn e Carter rode a TT500 M.C.ev ent. Minesh aft Prutsman decides not to take the tra in. To m 'Brooks wins .third st ra ig ht AM A Do min ate s Des ert M.C. We ste rn Re gio nal Ra re and Ro und Ch am pio nsh ip By Gary Laudig FREM ONT VA LLEY. CA,JA N. 30 Sunday mor ning broke clea r and bright as the AMA D-37 racers assembled for 130 miles of real desert racing. For the first time this year lit . Both we had real dustat 10:05 . smoke bombs were rain but miscalc ulated the 30-foot way 10 .and the race was under ' By 10:12 the leader. Cordis Brooks was at Check One. Cordis Brooks h ad a good quarter -mile lead over. second pl ace Max Eddy , followed by Sled Rider Marc Cartwr ight. Bob R utt en , right on Cartwr ight's fender , oversho t the turn out of the starting wash. as did Eddy and Mike Edmon son . Senior O p e n , Gordo n Schmi d of t?e S?rehe ads. was fifth overall . Jim Fishbac k ca me by sev~nth - .th en I had to run for cover. First NOVIce was _ Beverly Hughes, Desert Squirre l , with Rick Hickm an . Rich Baxter . Jay Ganong . Adrian Ahuero and Gary Coving ton close behind . Beginn er 581 X was running eighth overal~ as the res t of the racers flew by with no appare nt problem s or crashes . Cordis held his lead but things were a cha ngin' in the backgro und. Dwayne Caner moved up to second from sixth. Tom Broo ks moved up to th ird fro m about 12th at the bo mb . Larry Roesele r started his move behind Tommy Brooks , moving up to fourth from about l-tth, Cartwright held fifth, Rutten sixth . About 15 miles out. Tom Brooks passed Carter and Cordis Brooks for the lead: By t he .t i ~ e the leaders cleared the b ig down hill into the soft sand and rock chop, leading to Red Rock Ra nd Road (one of three road crossings). Tom Brooks was well in first , Carter in second with Rutten third and Roesele r in fourth . Coming out of Check Two, Cartwr ight decided to make his bid for position , ditches at the foothill s and crashed , ending a real good ride. Tom Kelly from DRA stopped to help him out. Open Amateu r Ron Irby was moving real well around 25th overall . but the real hot shoe Amateu r . was Mike Godfre y running about 12th overall on a two -five-oh (250cc) . "Dicing in the dust" were Russ Jenkins , Rick Schoen maker and Steve Lindsey . bounci ng back a nd forth betwee n 10th and 14th overall . Gordon Schmid fixed his stuck throttle and moved back to about 17th, up from fifth , while Dick Camp put on his charge and moved by for first Senior Open Expert. After the rollers lead ing into Gas O ne on the Golar road , the riders stayed in the same position s. The course ran up into the Rad em acher mining area, the only real crud on the whole course due to over use. Crossin g Trona road into the Spangl er Mounta ins, the riding was real neat. At Gas Two (home check) I waited to see what the terrain had done to the overall position s. Tom Brooks came out of the mounta ins with th e throttle to the stops. We don't know where he pitted but it wasn't at gas Two. About three minute s later the resonan t sound of a TT500 boomed out of the pa ss and here came Dwa yne Carter. Ab out two minute s later Numbe r One Expert Roesele r came in an d pitted. Fourth place belonge d to Bob Rutten . who took about a four m inute pit due to a broken rear brake rod that came loose about 15 miles out from Gas Two . Bob got out of the pits before the next bike came through - Bruce Ogilvie . who was nursing a bad clu tch. Cordis ' pitted at the Sham Rocks. followed by Big Jim Fishbac k. Kill er Kilgore moved up from about l Oth to first with Novice Richard Baxter pushing him all the way . Novice Larry Langley was back a ways but still into the Amateu r and Expert crowd for third Open. Runnin g first 250 was Don Brand Jr. , at ninth overall . with Rick Hic kman nine bikes back, ho lding down second 250 . Beginn ers and Trail Novices, I had to apologi ze - I can't be at 13 places at once and missed your finish . We had to race from Red Mounta in to th e finish in time to ca tch the leaders . The finish was one big su rprise. Tomm y Brooks and Larry Roesele r were one and two with Carter in for third. It seems Tom got lost a couple of times , had to pass Carter, which was no easy task . Then Dwayne stalled his bike on a hill and let Larry in for second . The finish had a numbe r of surprise s in the other classes . Mike Godfre y finished l l th overall and first 250 Amateu r. His closest compet ition was Steve Spragle . Nine places back, Dick Camp cruised in for first Senior Open with Gordon Schmid . right behind him for second . Joe Lockha rt finished 47 position s ahead of the next Trail Expert for first place. But the Trail Bike shoe of the day was G reg Thoma s , who cru ised in at 26th overall , first Trail Bike, first Trail Bike Amateu r. and a super happy guy. T he list goes on and on. but the consens us feeling- for the race was "Birche n." I didn't hear one compla int at the finish line. Jack Froelic h finishin g 31st overall, first -Senior Expert 2.50, couldn 't say enough about the race. He was totally ecstatic . fame) out to prepare for Soboba , sa id the race was fun. Former Numbe r O n e of the Dez , Dick Vick, who is 47 years young. finished 38th overall on a street legal bike. Q uote of the week. from Charlie Barney , eighth overall : "It's about time someon e threw a desert race instead of a road race." Determ ination Prize has to go to the " Blue Max" Eddy. Max came into gas ' leading on a flat, fixed the flat , and by . Gas Two, he was stuck in second a nd third gears . and got a rear flat for the finish. An easy way to describ e this course: the Shamro cks shou ld get a Desert M.C . course map , subm it it to BLM , ask Desert MC to leave up the ribbon and marker s (which were placed superbl y), and call it their two day • ISDT qualifie r.
