( 714) 735 ·7721 At today's season opener almost 100 class entrants vied for the honor of being first "over the top" of one of DeAnza's remaining unclimbed hills , The fact that Doug Hall had post ed SI 00 for each of th e first three riders over th e top didn't seem to bother th e rid ers as mu ch as it bother ed th e a nnouncers. By lunch break , Neal Ma ckel had j ust m anaged to hold off Ron T rue in th e 750 / 0 pen Mod ified class ( by almost two fee t ) . T o t h e le ss knowled gea ble , it loo ked like th e hill m ight just reami n unci imbed . Bot h Mackel a nd True ac know ledged th at a "ti p of th e ca n" and a gea ring cha nge would proba bly do the job in t he afternoo n . One of the big surp rises of th e mornin g was 19-year·old Cra ig Mock a nd h is 262' clim b on a modifi ed 360 Yamaha . Craig Mock 's 360 Yamaha (ru n ni ng in the 500 class) did a fast 260' wit h Cra ig ste p ping off j ust before th e bike did a back two and one-half with a one -hal f ga ine r . Look out for Kerry Pet erson a nd 'h is stock (yes" stoc k) 400 Mai co . He managed a 296' run to tak e cont rol of th e 400 Stock class. . Alice Hudnell on a st ock 500 Yamaha 4 stroke r showed that a pretty blond buyer for National Paper could ge t it on as she went 188' . Bob Day lost first pla ce in th e 650 Stoc k class by 19' to Bill C arrell who went 255 ' , Watching Bob ride belies his fift y plus yea rs of age . Bruce Kunzler wanted to see what a hillclimb was all about and ended up winning the Begin ner 250 clas s with a 185' rid e . Reall y not too sha b by when you consider th at Kerry Pet erson went 22 1' to best Dick DeRosa in th e Veteran 250 Stock clas s. T he closest t ha t a ny one co u ld get to Ke r ry Peterson in t he 400 Stock class was a. d ista nt 66' awa y. Kerry go t a t DeR osa in the 400 Modi fied class by goi ng 268 ' to Dick's losing 24 0' . Bill Carrell topped th e 650 Stoc k class with a 255' run . T he 650 Modified class was a n instant repl ay for Bill as he put 20' bet ween himself a nd seco nd place Ron Saffe!' The nose to ld whe n th e big- bo re mo d ified bikes were -run ning. A really wild show with st retched fra mes , injected N itro-bu rni ng moto rs and cha in whee ls. Ron Standeren and his Hon d a 4 . Nea l Ma ckel' s beautifu l Triumph and Ron True's flattrack er Norton were th e on ly 750 bi kes t hat m ade it over the top , Dou g Ha ll mov ed the sta rt ing lin e up the hill another 40 feet in a n effort to b reak the th ree-way tie . W ith th e starting line moved u p , a rid er had to make a successfu l st a rt , acce lerate uphill a bo ut 20 -25 feet then turn right a bo ut 30 d egrees, figh tin g his way through th e soft upper layer of dirt a nd bumps th at cove red th e next 140 -145 feet, th en sti ll have eno ug h left to power up th e last , almost vert ical 100 feet. Ma ckel did it on his first run , St andren was next bu t onl y managed 260 ' on his Honda'. Ron T rue ende d th e d ay with a 292 ' run a nd had th e du bious honor of being fou rth (out of th e money) over th e top. • Results in Results Section. Walton and McIntire win at Elsinore IT By Andi Gangewer ELSINORE , CAL. ,JAN. 15 At the Elsinore evening TT Scrambles, Tommy 'W a lton put on a terrific performance in the 125 Novice race. Curtis J ones (H a n) pulled the hole shot but Walton soon had the lead spo t. Walton continued to stretch out his lead while Bruce Heiland and Jones fought it out between themselves as to who would be the next one over the finish line behind Walton. On lap three Heiland got under Jones and took second. Heiland and Walton were the ones engaged in the battle during the second moto. Walton foll owed Heiland around for three laps and watched and waited for his chance to take over the lead . Heiland left the door open just a crack and Walton plowed through to take the lead. Jones was again held to a third . In th e final go 'ro u nd, Walton really' put it to 'em , leading from start to fin ish . Jones managed to pull off second , and Heiland h ad to be cont ent with a third.
