Consistency in snow wins for Kirkpat rick By Jan Newman BEN D, OR , J A N . 2 Mitch Kirkpatrick won the Open Pro class on a sn ow-whitened Deschutes Park motocross course, though he b arely got wit hin a third of a lap of the leaders. He was aided by consistent finis hes and a quirk of fate . Moto on e started as a t ig h t b att le between R a n d y Limbeck , Ba rney New m a n and Ro d Kentner. Kentner was the first victim when he pitted after h is bike seized , losing a lap in the process . Meanwhile , Newman was leading the chase when Limbeck came out of a comer and the wheelie he pu lled down the straight got out o f hand . The resulting unplanned seating arrangement sent him to the pits. Moto two found the same trio ou t front again. T his time it was Limbeck, Kentner and Newman until Newman found a rock in the barrel which shot him off the track into more rocks , m ashing his shifter and flattening his front tire . As a spectator he wa tched Kentner finish the final lap on a destr oyed rea r wheel. Mini Expert Ken ny New completely domin ated the combined classes- of Mini Inte rmedia te, Mini Ex pert and 100 Junior . Each class consisted of only two riders. Sta cy Fa gen was the sole 100 Junior su rvivor after Ed Anker crashed in th e first moto . In moto two Fagen h ad onl y to su rvive to win but he came dan gerously close to . n ot mak ing it. He spent considera ble time perfect ing h is t owe r corne r c r as h technique. . Another Fagen , John , d id better in the 125 Intermediate/Junior ra ce. H e led the pack to the flag in both motos for th e Intermed ia te trop hy. Da vid Link won th e first Junior battle and was first off the line in the seco nd round . As the p ack a pproached the barrel tum Fa ge n made a pass for the lead ca tching Link's rear whe el in the p rocess. Link was left high centered on the lip of the tum while the entire pack went by . SCOtt G r eene t ook overa ll with a three -one tally. Ron Lo ng and R ick McVne held a four moto d uel in bot h th e 250 and O pe n Intermediate classes. CA ,JAN. 9 Mike Hersma n, 16 , ri ding with his ea rned N umber " 1" a t the first B.O .S.S. MX of the yea r, ' piloted his Husk y to the ove rall win for the 250 Pro class. In the first moto Hersman took over from Lon Wardell (Suz) in th e th ird lap and stretc hed . Wardell had second under control wh ile Cha lm a Rober ts and Wayne Ar cher took turns putt ing their KTMs in third. Archer was th er e when it counted. The second moto , Wardell pulled the lea d right awa y. and look ed strong. Jo hn Minor (Suz) was next up. Meanwhile, Hersman had a bad st art . In the third lap Wardell spun out , letting Minor and Archer get by before he got started ag a in . Roberts was cha rgi ng too a n d cam e around Wardell about the sam e time th at Minor went do wn , and Hersm an h ad caught upl Now it was a rea l tight race with Archer still leading Robert s and H ersma n , but not for long . Robert s went by Ar cher , and started pullin g a head . W ithi n a lap , H er sm an had also passed Ar ch er , and when he , ca ugh t up with Rob ert s, the best part of the ra ce began! The two of th em fought it out for the re maini ng .fou r la ps . Near t he end of th e las t lap, Ro bert s missed a sh ift and Hersman buzzed by. When the 125 Pros too k off for th e first moto, Magoo (Da n ChandlerKTM), although signed up . was not' am ong them . Pie d id get on th e track a f t e r th e start b ut was not , in cont ention . Don Ferraro (H on) led a co uple of laps but had trouble with th e mud packing on his bike. Robert Norton (H on) took the lead , but th en Don Cantaloupi (Ya m) grabbed it an d held it. Norton finis hed second with Mike Pr eston (Suz) third , and Dav e Wood (Hon) fourth . By th e tim e th e 125s had th eir second shot at the track . Pr eston had been i nju red ( possible brok en leg ) riding th e Open clas s. Cantaloupi hol eshot t he se co n d rn oto , then crashed an d Magoo took over. Norton an d ~ood wer e go ing for secon d plac e while Cantaloupi was back on the track a nd gassing . W ood was drop ping off th e pa ce just enough with h is bike spu ttering to let Canta loupi by. a nd it was Nort on' s turn to try to ho ld out. T he ra ce for second was sett led when Norton's Honda wa tered out. .Magoo was fa r gone . Cantal oupi took th e second, but got fir st overall . The co m ing Bultaco ride r fro m Orangeval e , Darrell Shultz . made a cle a n sweep of th e 250 Pro cla ss. winning both motos . In th e first ro und he and Magoo fou ght tooth and na il for that lead , both .looking rea l loose! Magoo went by Shultz on acrobati c tal ent , but la ter in the ra ce crashed coming off the flat top ju m p. He tri ed getting back in th e ra ce beh ind Roberts, but found he had no brak es and had to give it up_ At the fini sh it was Shultz , R o b e r t s th en Mike Hersm an (Hus) followed by Ph il Crane (Suz) and John Minor (Suz) . After sorting themselves out in the first lap of the second moto , first and seco nd positions (Schu ltz a nd Magoo) were way out and th e interest tu rned to the race for third place between five riders: Hersm an . Minor , Lo n W a rd ell (S uz), Crane a nd R ob ert s. Crane began pick ing off th e oth ers one by one and mov ed into second whe n Magoo b it out. But there was no cha nce of getting near Sh ultz. Gary Murphy dominated t he Open Pros, winning both mud ru ns. Seco nds were shared by Renny Bru ns (Hus) and Rich Paris (Suz), with bo th thirds • go ing to Ted Rogers (H us).
