Raceway (SPIR), with over 100 Experts in attendance and enough 250s to work a heat-to-final system. The riders wanted the change rather than run two separate divisions. The pay was doubled and the final entrants got a chance to test their mettles on each other despite a very short final moto. The day's events were slow in starting when the huge turnout forced extension the practice period. Very few had the proper credentials and were forced to wait in long lines to get cards. Phil Crane came on strong for the 125 Expert second moto to win the overall with Pat Richter in for second on the new Kanemoto Racing Honda. The 250 Juniors were hard pressed to beat GB Racing star Brad Kotsaris with Russ Daley taking on Ron Melton and Art Elliot for the big brass while Dave Mozingo came out of the Sonora hills to win one of two 250 Novice divisions. The first run of the Old Timers class as a District 36 event saw Jack Lewis r '1')'.Jlri was the site for Norcal's first motocross of the year. The track was described all the way from "excellent" to "bitchin." The layout featured several off- camber sections, uphills and downs and some nice open straight aways . The traction was probably the best thing about the track with good sticky dirt and grass that firmed -up nicely for berms. The most exciting racingof the day came in 500 Pro. Brad Lackey , on board an "older" RC Honda , pulled to a commanding lead in moto one followed closely by Bill Grossi (Suz) and Kent Classen (KTM). Held up in traffic was Jim Turner (Suz) who was starting to drive harder every lap. Turner soon got by Klassen and was off after Grossi. Grossi unloaded. and they finished with Lackey first, Turner second, Klassen third. Moto two began with Turner pulling out front and Lackey not far behind. For several laps Turner held a safe margin over the factory Honda rider. But towards the half-way point Lackey started to push the Canadian champ hard . Coming down a tight offcamber, Lackey cut low on Turner and aced him out. But coming around from the backside of the track Turner was once again in the lead.' With two laps to go Lackey got by Turner once again and Jim wasn 't able to get back at Brad this time. They finished Lackey first with Turner a close twoseconds behind. Jerry Castillo (Suz) led the start of the first 250 Pro race. Following close behind were Kipp Klassen (KTM) and Paul Turner (Suz). Also coming up from a first turn entanglement were Bill Grossi and Pat Richter (Suz). By the end of the moto Klassen had pulled out a good lead and Pat Richter was in second after a brief battle with Turner and Grossi . Moto two was Grossi's race all the way. Pat Richter and Paul Turner did some dueling for second, but Richter was on the gas , ending up second overall. Pat Richter completely dominated both motos of the 125 Pro race. Riding a Keith Bontrager-prepared Honda 125, Richter was untouchable. Jeff Watts riding a Husqvarna looked . exceptionally good riding to two second. • Results in Results Section. \,... ! { I " ", 1 : 1 1"')) still being the winner on the Dam Cycle Bultaco with Rich Doble the Vet winner over Loren Tunstall. • Results in Results Section.
