Three dust free races in a rowl The bomb run was fairly fast , with a few rocks and d.'tches to ke:p everyone honest ; dumping down in to th e sa n.d wash famous for tank slappers , leg sel~U:es , a nd the advancement of religion. The race got und erway at exactly 10:15 A.M. At 10 : 18 Tom Bro oks passed the smoke bomb , glancing over his shoulder at second -p lace Max Eddy (KTM) , about 100 yards behind. . Right behind Eddy was Kevin Hasten , getting back into it after being out of the 0 -37 wa rs for quite a whi le. In fourth p lace , Sled Rider Marc Cartwright (250 KTM ), sailed through th e whoops with no apparent troubl e. follow ed by Bob Ru tt en who was going fo r his first finish of the year. Last overall to t he bomb was John McCown. Seems John didn' t have the starting seq uence straigh t on the 410cc Honda four. stroke he borrowed . h I h . Tom Franz about.75 ya rd s behind , One pIe p later let his TT500 get away fro m him in th e whoops , whil e old "Cu t across" Shorty from the Lost Coyotes played it safe on the trail to the left of the sand wash . The remainder of the ride rs filtered through and on t heir merry way for fifty miles of fun in the sun. Brooks held his lead on across Johnson Va lley, while Larry Roeseler (250 Hus) worked his way up fro m about 18th to 2nd place, two minutes behind Brooks. Chuck Pet tigrew had moved up to third in front of Cartwright and Hasten , and they were flying together down the fireroad past Coo pe r Strand Mine when Pettigrew got carried away and lost it wide open . Chuck hit th e ground, jumped up and ran ou t of the way of H asten. and Cartwright. who were so amazed at the "rubber man's" feats they ra n off the side of the road . Mike Edmondson acquired two flat tires, Bru ce Ogilvie got one fla t tire, Terry " Ca b le " Da vis seized, Jeff Kapl a n ran out of gas ; while ba ck at th e bom b , sat Ama teur Bob Edm iston because his rear tire fell off. R icha rd Bax ter of t h e Stu m p J um pers moved u p to seco nd -place Novice behind Invader Tom Fr anz. Ben H ughes and Killer Kilgore diced it out, with Hughes leading into th e pits . Tom Holmes led the 250s, whil e M. Connolly held on to first in Division I1~ First ov erall Beginner went 0 Heavyweight rider Mike Hargen. First T rail Novic e was Rich Busse , with Al Guzman and Jim Moeller second and third . Chuck Pollock and Mike Couch bagged first and second 250 Begi nner . Will Bu rm a n and Dave Elias were first and second Division II Begi n ners. Trail Beginner finishers were Par Farris , St eve Sew ell , and Ke Patterson. Starting the second loop , Brooks and his Competition Service Cycle KTM maintained a two minute lea~ over second -place La rry Roesel r. Cartwright, riding out of Eric Jense Super Cycle Shop, moved int o th ir with Bob Rutten taking possessio n 0 fourth . Brent "Sprint" Wallings ford , working his way u p from a bad start, held fif th overall . Du ane " Fo u Stroke" Carter, back in the desert aft a year-and-a-half layoff d ue to inj ury too k sixth. "Welcome back Carter. " Ru tt en managed to get his Anahei Sport Cycle Husky ta ngled up in som wire so Wallingsford went by. takin over fourt h on h is "Up T ight ' sponsored Husky. The sa nd on th second loop ca used most of t h problems , especially for the small-bor bikes . A few even got lost. Mitchel Payton held sole possession of firs Division II Expert , and tenth overall aft er h is co m p e t i t io n, Ric Shoenmaker did a cliff-diving act Brian Wright and Ken Miller chas each other acr oss th e Mojave. Wright show in g no ill effects from his broke wrist . maintained th e lead. Lou Monterone lost his duckbi during a small getoffin the mountains but kept ahead of Tim Harper. At th bottom of the " Duck" downhill , waited for the finish . Br ook effortlessly worked his way down th cobby slope two minutes ahead Roeseler , who also made the hill 100 easy . Marc Cartwright came dow n th hill in third . . Brooks said th e course was Ion tiring and m arked fair. Cha rlie H ami ll, 0 of Raceway Cycle , bagged 14th overa even though his swing a rm broke 0 the left side, th rowing his chain off 0 top of Sage mountain .
