lfuproving his lead throughout the race, Bob
Balentine (400 KTM) easily won the 72-mile
' RA hare scrambles.
.., Balentine was one of three racers in equal
ntention as th e race started in
a vily overcas t con d itions . Ph i l
tu m bo (400 KTM) was first to th e
mokeb omb . Cordis Brooks (25 0 Bul )
merged fro m a side trail to ta ke t he
ad for th e next three m iles. As
roo ks and Bal entin e approached a
itch, Brooks slowed while Ba lentin e
id not. Bal ent in e too k the lead from
at point and held it for the rest of
e race. Stumbo got by Brooks and
tai ned second place all the way to
e pits despite a flat rear tire at the
4·mile mark.
I For many of the racers , .positions
ere gained or lost at a hill near
ighway 395. At that hill the fog was
e thickest and many goggles became
vered with condensation. R ide rs
ere wiping their goggles every ten
et (as in Balentine's case ) or
moving them entirely and risking
eir bare eyes against the wet sand
at made up most of the course.
In fourth place behind Brooks was
ean Kirk (250 Hus). In fifth place
as a Novice , Riley Duncan (370 Su z),
ho had recovered exceptionally well
om a med ioc re start.
Balent in e had nearly a minute's
ad on Stumbo, who was about the
me distance in front of Brooks. In
e pits , Stum bo tried an instant flat
alant and when tha t didn't work , the
f r wheel was repla ced . Despite the
st time, Stu m bo later moved up into
e m id -twenties to finish third O pen
pert.
Duncan moved up to third when
umbo pitted and Kirk , missing a
ndlebar grip and unable to see due
) foggoed goggles. d ropped ba ck .
rooks had a healthy lead over
uncan and that was increased when
uncan's bike threw its chain on a hil l,
R iley's brother Scott was th ere to help
and Riley got going wit ho ut losing a
posi tion . The tim e lost did move
Mo nte Lee (250 Yam) up to pressure
Du ncan .
Balent ine finished wit h a lead of
several minutes. He had pitted twice ,
and according to his crew , the KTM
used almost three gallons of gas on th e
first loop and under two gallons on the
second loop . Brooks finished with a
similar lead over Duncan. who had the
highest overall placing of any Novice
in recent event s. Our-horsepowered on
th e fast , choppy course , Lee had to
settle for fourth and second in class .
Ron Richey (250 Hus) had one of
th e best rid es of his career to finish
fifth overall and first Amateur. Tim
Plant finished sixth , and first
lightweight. Plant had been running
sixth on the first loop when he had to
stop and ha ve his pipe repaired . Brett
Rou nd ( 125 Yam) got by and held the
cla ss lead until Plant passed. him near
the end of the second loop . No one else
passed Round and he finished seventh
overall .
AI Wurtzel (250 KTM ) won th e new
junior/Senior clas s for th e second race
in a row . Eighth overall , he finished
with a ble eding lip after having bit it
when he hit a sharp . sudden bump.
Ma rk Zoller was running well in the
early stages of the race , but the sho ck
unit of his 250 yamaha was set far too
stiff and he ti red q u ick ly. Zoller
finished ninth and third 250 Expert.
John Rogers (360 Hus) finished
tenth . and. was the second over-all
Novice . Rogers' last rac e was over a
yea r a nd a half ag o , and to add to his
acco m p lishment , this was the firs t
tim e in severa l years of trying that he
had don e well.
Gu s Pau ll (400 Ya m ) cont inu ed his
domina tion of the Senior class wit h
ano ther win , finishing 12t h .
