Ph i l tu m bo (400 KTM) was first to th e mokeb omb . Cordis Brooks (25 0 Bul ) merged fro m a side trail to ta ke t he ad for th e next three m iles. As roo ks and Bal entin e approached a itch, Brooks slowed while Ba lentin e id not. Bal ent in e too k the lead from at point and held it for the rest of e race. Stumbo got by Brooks and tai ned second place all the way to e pits despite a flat rear tire at the 4·mile mark. I For many of the racers , .positions ere gained or lost at a hill near ighway 395. At that hill the fog was e thickest and many goggles became vered with condensation. R ide rs ere wiping their goggles every ten et (as in Balentine's case ) or moving them entirely and risking eir bare eyes against the wet sand at made up most of the course. In fourth place behind Brooks was ean Kirk (250 Hus). In fifth place as a Novice , Riley Duncan (370 Su z), ho had recovered exceptionally well om a med ioc re start. Balent in e had nearly a minute's ad on Stumbo, who was about the me distance in front of Brooks. In e pits , Stum bo tried an instant flat alant and when tha t didn't work , the f r wheel was repla ced . Despite the st time, Stu m bo later moved up into e m id -twenties to finish third O pen pert. Duncan moved up to third when umbo pitted and Kirk , missing a ndlebar grip and unable to see due ) foggoed goggles. d ropped ba ck . rooks had a healthy lead over uncan and that was increased when uncan's bike threw its chain on a hil l, R iley's brother Scott was th ere to help and Riley got going wit ho ut losing a posi tion . The tim e lost did move Mo nte Lee (250 Yam) up to pressure Du ncan . Balent ine finished wit h a lead of several minutes. He had pitted twice , and according to his crew , the KTM used almost three gallons of gas on th e first loop and under two gallons on the second loop . Brooks finished with a similar lead over Duncan. who had the highest overall placing of any Novice in recent event s. Our-horsepowered on th e fast , choppy course , Lee had to settle for fourth and second in class . Ron Richey (250 Hus) had one of th e best rid es of his career to finish fifth overall and first Amateur. Tim Plant finished sixth , and first lightweight. Plant had been running sixth on the first loop when he had to stop and ha ve his pipe repaired . Brett Rou nd ( 125 Yam) got by and held the cla ss lead until Plant passed. him near the end of the second loop . No one else passed Round and he finished seventh overall . AI Wurtzel (250 KTM ) won th e new junior/Senior clas s for th e second race in a row . Eighth overall , he finished with a ble eding lip after having bit it when he hit a sharp . sudden bump. Ma rk Zoller was running well in the early stages of the race , but the sho ck unit of his 250 yamaha was set far too stiff and he ti red q u ick ly. Zoller finished ninth and third 250 Expert. John Rogers (360 Hus) finished tenth . and. was the second over-all Novice . Rogers' last rac e was over a yea r a nd a half ag o , and to add to his acco m p lishment , this was the firs t tim e in severa l years of trying that he had don e well. Gu s Pau ll (400 Ya m ) cont inu ed his domina tion of the Senior class wit h ano ther win , finishing 12t h . . Ed W a ldheim (400 KT M) fin ished thi rd overa ll among No vices and won th e j unior/ Sen ior class . Boyd J a nt zi (400 Ya m ) . th e firs t Open Ju n ior/S e n io r , was right b ehind Waldhei m . Gary Bu ssj a eg e r (2 50 Yam ) and John Foster ( 175 Yam ). Novic e class winners, wer e th e next two in th e overall order. Lori Farmer (175 CoA l was far a head of the oth er Powd er Puff Novices. T er ry Pelt z (250 Yam ) led th e Beginners on the first loop . Rich ard Mej ia (25 0 Yam) ca me up to pass Pelt z on th e seco nd loop.' Peltz go t by again an d put some distance on Meji a . Those two were th e on ly Beginners to rid e a ll three loops. Riley Da vid (400 Hus) was the last Beginner to be la p ped ; he took a first in cla ss. John Esc uj ari ( 17 5 Yam) won ' the ligh t we ig h t class, j ust ah ead of Junior/Senior winner Sam W eston (400 Yam). Ruthann Renaux wrestled a 400 Mono around th e cou rse and won her cla ss. fini shing fairl y well up in th e overa ll order. Jeff Spen cer (Hon) won th e single-loop Mini race.
