As one rider put it , "Sitting around the house gets old , and I couldn't let a race day like this go by," Second year pro Mel Newman of San Angelo , now sporting National No. 53 , had the lead over the 125 Experts until the fourth lap when his Suzuki's chain derailed. From then on, it was Dicky Turnbo aboard a borrowed stock Elsinore and Mike J ones on his FMF Honda in ' a battle that pulled away from Glen Johnson (Hon), Mike Hullett (Suz) , and Ivan Neeper (Han), Jones closed ' the gap but Turnbo held on to the checkers a bike length ahead. In the second moro, Turnbo jumped ahead . b ut this time Jones moved in quickly to take control on lap four. Trey Jorski (Suz), after a sixth in the opener. was running third in the final , b ut dropped out at th e ha lfway point of the ten -lap heat. and at the finish . J ones reversed his score for a 2·1 win over Turnbo's 1-2, Mike Hullett (4-4) , Glen Johnson (3·5), and Mel Newman (7-3). The IOOcc class first moto saw Mike Walcott drop his 'Zu ki in the very last corner and get promptly run over by Harry Heinze (Yam) . who won the race in the last few feet by managing not to crash himself. Walcott returned to smoke 'em in th e second moto, but Heinze's 1·2 marks were tops, with Waco's David Lassetter (Suz) second at 2,3 , and Eric Eames third overall on his new Suzuki. Santa was good 'to many of today's riders, incl uding Chad Calvert, out on a new YZ80 after years on an X R75 . Unfo rt unately, Obie J ones -also had designs on first p lace in Junior Mini, and it was no t to be denied. -j ones (Yam) led a ll the way, trailed by Ca lvert . Glen Nelson, and Mark Kinder of Shennan . Da llas rider Chris John Talbot (39 ) placed third in both the Over·30 and 250 Novice races at Lake Whitney.
