; NORTIERN DATELINE P.1.T.5. Trial By Joe and Denise Bolde~ HOLLISTER HILLS, CAL., NOVEMBER 13 & 14 Saturday the Novice A , Novice B, Juniors and Ladies enjoyed the Hollister Hills Trials. Not too hard and not too easy! The traction was super! It had rained a few days before. making it really bitchin, Sections nine and ten were continuous through the rocks. Section II proved to be th e mo st challenging of the day. For the Ladies and Juniors a rocky off cam ber entrance and a turn through two narrowly spaced trees surrounded by ruts ready to jump up out of the ground and snatch your bike out from un dernea th you. ' Bu t for th e novices they didn't get away quite so esyl They . had to fly over a humungous ro ck or go between a narrow slot without getting hung up, then up onto the bank for a sharp right tum between the two trees! There ' wer~ plenty of checkers and free brown bag surprises for lunch! The Experts and Amateurs were out practicing earlier that day, they were envious of the super traction that the Novices had. They figured (Heh! Heh!) that it would still be there for them tomorrow, but it wasn't. It began to rain at about 9 o'clock and many pondered about whether to stay and be a fool or to leave. The riders started out at 10:00 a.m. looking happier than pigs . in a pile of gudunga. They had planned on two or three loops at an earlier date but by the time many made it back they thought they would settle for just one loop. But it was finally decided upon to have two loops! (This years Blooper!) They started out in six groups of five. The first riders d id not come back in un til after 1:00 a lmost 1:30 . They all said they co uldn't m ake it to a nd through Traps 1, 2, 3, a nd 4: The mem bers of the groups took turns for the first few hours pushing each other's bikes out of the m ud . Rider's front fenders were packed with mud so bad that almost anyone that wanted to continue riding had to pull them off. Tom Cullen came back • ~ III with about nine fenders for everyone to claim later. 28 points was the low score for the first loop by Expert Steve Da rrow. When the Rider s learned that there really 'was going to be a second loop they had things to say like "You're kidding", "You' re crazy", "Are you putting me on?", "Alrigh t wher's the Candid Camera?" , ':Jolly 0 '" and all the rot. But of course the. Expert 's reply was " Let's do it!" Riders didn't reappear until around 5:30ish' - 6:00 to turn in th eir second lap loop cards. The Amateurs looked sort of whipped , but the Experts were still going strong! Can you beli eve those fools wanted a third lap? • E· 1:"1:"(j') ...... ~ ~ l-o ~ ~ ~ • ~ -, Another Bast is King By W .H. Spencer SAN FRANCISCO , CAL.. NOV. 26·27 T hanksgiving Speedway racers congregate around San Francisco's fam ed Cow Palace for the Pacific Coast Regional Championships. The third annual · affair fell to the Bast family for the third time with ' Mike Bast , four time US champion winning for the second time. Bast 's stiffest competition came from Mike Faria and th e final event, th e Indoor championship, was decided by about an inch. and a half at the checkered when Bast and Faria put on the ultimate show . Mike Bast corrected a slight error and 'Mike Faria nearly capitalized to the utmost for it. In an interview after the night 's runs, Mike admitted to a closeness of that event and gave Faria a lot of credit. He had the event ' won more than once but had his p rob lems. The dirt track did deteriorate at the end of the second night, but was in far better condition than in the past two years and the riders were very appreciative. Friday night Low yardage men appeared to have a slight advantage at the onset of the Hand icap heats with John McDonnell winning the first ro und over Mikc Curoso. John had just returned from the Mike Bast ' school at Ken Ma ely's ranch . The second heat saw Dave Faria come off the 20 for the heat win and was rewarded with an immediate 10 yard addition. He went on to win Friday night's winners ham and cheese it up w ith Supe r Becky.
